Wine of the Weekend

Mountadam Five-Fifty Shiraz 2019

In honour of Family Day weekend, we have selected a very special winery that was started by one family and revitalized by another. In 1972, one of the greatest visionaries in Australian wine, David Wynn, founded a winery and named it Mountadam after his son, Adam. By 1984 Adam was the winemaker, but after David’s passing, the winery was sold to a multinational company. Fast forward to 2005 when the Brown family purchased the winery, bringing it back into family hands to continue the Wynn family’s vision of producing wines of elegance and structure. The 550 Shiraz is exactly that.

Tasting Notes: The cool climate of the Eden Valley gives this 100% Shiraz a ripe and perfumed nose with flavours of dark berries, touches of floral notes and spice. Ten months in French oak has created a wine with silky tannins and integrated flavours that linger through the finish.

Enjoy With: Barbequed meats like steak, ribs or burgers. Shiraz is also a classic pairing for lamb dishes like shanks or braised leg of lamb, and smaller snacks like smoked gouda cheese on toasted baguette.

Style: A full-bodied, smooth red wine.

Terroir/Region: Mountadam’s High Eden vineyards are some of the highest in the Barossa region, with the winery itself sitting at 550m above sea level. The cooler climate created by the elevation helps Mountadam slowly ripen its grapes resulting in building big, juicy flavours while maintaining a tight structure in its wines.

Producer: Mountadam prides itself on only producing ‘estate wines’ – wines grown in vineyards owned by the winery. This practice ensures that winery staff has a careful hand in every element of making the wine, from vine to wine.
