Venue of the Day series featured jazz/folk club The Third Eye in Wellington, Blue Smoke in Christchurch, Dome Cinema in Gisborne, The Old Stone Butter Factory in Whangarei, The Victoria Arms Hotel in stunning Cromwell, and last - but definitely not least - Whammy Bar in St Kevin's Arcade, Auckland. In the tips from artists Touring Well! section this week there was handy info from Nomad, Umar Zakaria, Brooke Singer from French for Rabbits, Bronwyn Halley, The Datsuns drummer Ben Cole, Moana Maniapoto from Moana & The Tribe, and Tali. Celebrating New Zealand's history of great live music
establishments, the 'Facts of Live' series - in partnership with music history website Audioculture - looked at Wellington folk music coffee lounge Monde Marie, Auckland post-punk venue XS Cafe, legendary spot in Dunedin Arc Cafe, the rise of Wellington's clubland in the 80s, the Auckland High & Lorne Street modern jazz scene centered around Cause Celebre, Al Park's Mollet Street venue in Christchurch, and what is now called The Bluestone Room, but was then known as Zwines
Niteclub - who are reviving their rock n'roll roots with the Punk It Up show this coming Saturday night. Mai FM have an awesome competition for budding hip hop and RnB acts this NZ Music Month. All you to do to enter is upload a track via the Mai FM website. Each day, the station will play one of the tracks on air and there'll be an audience vote. The act with the most votes will get to mix and master their track at Woodcut Studios Auckland, and Mai will tee up a feature from an NZ artist, hook the winner up with $500 cash and guarantee to play the song on Mai! Past winners include Tazman Jack with his single 'Together'
and Lost Tribe Aotearoa with their hit 'Irie'. Entries close Friday, May 31st at 3pm!
LIVE MUSIC ON WHAT NOW Set the alarm for the kids this weekend, as What Now is having local musicians appear and perform on the show each Sunday morning in May to celebrate NZ Music Month. You can view Openside's lively performance from last weekend on the TVNZ website now (viewable at 1:13). This weekend What Now have a Pacific Music Awards special, featuring RAZÉ and Punialava'a who are both finalists at the Pacific Music Awards and will be also performing at the Awards on the night.

During May, all the student radio stations around the country have chosen a week during which they'll only play kiwi music! If you are in one of the main centres then do check out your local station, otherwise check out the list below and have a listen online. SOFAR SOUNDS x NZ MUSIC MONTH x MUSICHELPS
Sofar Sounds Auckland is a part of a worldwide organisation that sets up gigs in people's own living rooms and other unusual spaces! On 29 May, they're doing a special gig for NZ Music Month with all proceeds going to MusicHelps, which both encourages the use of music as therapy and also supports local musicians who having personal difficulties. If you want to come along then RSVP below and bring koha on the night:
MUSICIANS OF AOTEAROA POSTER CAMPAIGN
Phantom Billstickers are literally plastering city walls with the faces of local musicians. For their Musicians of Aotearoa campaign, they've picked musicians who had an important impact, but perhaps aren't as well known as they should be. For
example, John Halvorsen (shown above) who played in cult bands The Gordons and Bailter Space who were key acts on Flying Nun. Keep your eyes peeled for these giant portraits across the streets of Aotearoa!
The Going Live sessions are live steamed mini-concerts by artists all over Aotearoa bought to you via the NZ Music Month Facebook page. Going Live sessions will stream at 4pm every Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesday we hosted Christchurch duo PRINS, and this Friday we will be Going Live from Invercargill with Sam Cullen. Last week we had Pereri King from Hawkes Bay, who's 2018 Going Live session was our most watched. His current video is well on it's way with 11,000 views in a single week!

OMAC in association with Auckland Council, Rockshop & SAE Institute, are presenting the Drummer's Day Out this Saturday 25 May. The event includes drum clinics by:
- BRAD KORA (L.A.B, Kora)
- PENA TE'EVALE (Che Fu & The Krates)
- JONO SAWYER (Session)
- STEPHEN THOMAS (Session)
- JESS HIX (Session)
There's also an exclusive performance by Che Fu and the Krates, and a Drumming & Music Industry Q+A featuring the clinicians along with Scott Pearson (Elemeno P), Katie Baya (Robinson), and Regal Drums (Kings).
SENNHEISER PRESENTS - HEADS GARAGE SESSIONS On Friday we dropped the second video of this series which had indie pop band Balu Brigada performing at Heads Garage in Swish HQ using Sennheiser mics and equipment. Coming up this Friday is a performance by reggae group SOJØURN, with the final in the series featuring hip hop artist MELODOWNZ The first act was pop singer Tijay, and you can check out her track here.
Coming up this Saturday 25 May is the NZ Music Month Summit, in partnership with the Music Managers Forum NZ. Featuring a range of artist and industry speakers - including Tami Neilson, Julia Deans, Mel Parsons and Laughton Kora - this year the Summit focuses on live music - festivals with the bookers, promoting shows, tips of the touring trade and more. Tickets to this event are only $10 plus booking fees, with 100% of the proceeds going to MusicHelps. And thanks to APRA AMCOS, all attendees also receive a free Eat My Lunch box on the day!
COMING UP ON EPISODE 5 This new series looks at some of the legendary “anthems” written and performed by local musicians. The first four episodes of this series have
had an amazing array of hitmakers from New Zealand - you can watch catch up episodes over on the Prime website. The fourth episode featuring all of NZ's overseas success stories is particularly unmissable! The fifth and final episode will play this Sunday 26 May at 8.30pm on Prime and looks at the independent spirit in kiwi music. Many of our most popular, or critically acclaimed, acts worked outside of the
major label industry structure, so this episode explores this route to success. Featuring anthems by Blam Blam Blam, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Push Push, Straitjacket Fits, The Clean, The Chills, Headless Chickens, Mareko, Chris Knox, Shona Laing and The Swingers.
They've done it again! Every year, the good folk in at Kings Sound Centre in Levin organise a great day of entertainment to celebrate NZ Music Month. This year is the fifth installment of NZ Music Month Levin and it will be held on Saturday 25 May from 10am-4pm. This year there will be
two main stages, with free giveaways all through the day. Nomad will be performing alongside over 60 other groups that range from reggae to jazz to solo acts. There's even a drum circle, karaoke, and the chance to have your own photo taken on the red carpet!
Coming up tomorrow is the Pacific Music Awards 2019. The event will feature live performances by finalists including Tomorrow People, Punialava'a, Razé and Poetik - plus special tribute performances. With
an incredible array of talented nominees and an always exceptional show, one of the great things about the Pacific Music awards is that anyone can attend. If you can't make the show, the event will be live-streamed on the TP Plus
website.
