Welcome Back BBQ

To kick off the start of the 2016-17 school year, the CGS Student Body Government will host its annual Welcome Back BBQ!

 

All CGS students and alumni are welcome to this event along with their family and friends. Come out for a great night of free food, drinks, games, prizes, and karaoke!

Graduation and Add/Drop Deadlines Drawing Near

 

The deadline to apply for Fall 2016 graduation is Friday, September 9th. After this date you will be charged a late fee to apply for graduation.

 

If you are planning on graduating in December 2016 and have not completed the application for graduation and graduation review, please contact the CGS front desk to set up an appointment as soon as possible. The front desk can be reached at (412) 624-6600.

 

If you are graduating with a certificate not offered through CGS, you must go to the school that offers the certificate and fill out a separate graduation application by that school's application deadline.

 

The add/drop deadline for the Fall 2016 term is also Friday, September 9th. If you are planning on graduating in December, please notify your advisor of any changes in your fall schedule so they can ensure your graduation will not be affected.

Our Fall 2016 CGS Open House will be Monday, October 10, 2016 from 4:30-7 p.m. Anyone interested in a CGS major or certificate is welcome to stop by to learn more about our programs and offerings.

 

 

Our annual CAAP Testing will begin the week of October 3, 2016.

Read with a Purpose: A Workshop on Effective, Time-Saving Reading Strategies

September 13 - 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Beat Writer's Block and Get Organized: A Workshop on Starting a Writing Project

September 20 - 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

September 21 - 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

September 22 - 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

 

Asking Questions and Finding Answers: A Workshop on Building a Research Project

September 27 - 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

September 28 - 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

September 29 - 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

 

All workshops will take place in the McCarl Center Conference Room.

CGS STudent Government

CGS Ambassadors

 

The CGS Ambassadors will be contacting all new and transfer students at the start of fall term. Make sure you look out for their email to take advantage of their tips and guidance!

 

Beginning this fall, the CGS Ambassadors will also send out a monthly email to students with information on important events and deadlines. Keep an eye out for these emails so you can keep track of all the special opportunities available to CGS students throughout the school year!

If you are interested in getting involved in student groups at CGS, please email Adam Robinson. Adam is the Director of the McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success and would love to meet with you to talk about all the ways you can be active in the CGS community.

 

McCarl Center News

Writing and Math Help Available for All CGS Students

 

The McCarl Center offers CGS students one-on-one consultations and tutoring to help with your math and writing assignments.

 

This fall, we're welcoming Libby Ferda to the CGS family as a new writing tutor. She and current writing tutor April Flynn will each be available 5 hours a week to assist students. All in-person appointments will take place in the McCarl Center, 1400 Posvar Hall.

 

Bring any writing project—academic, creative, or professional. Make your appointment by calling (412) 624-6556 or by going to pitt.mywconline.com (select CGS schedule before you log in).

 

Writing Center Fall Hours

Tuesday: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Wednesday: 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Thursday: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Friday: 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

 

Our current math tutor Donna Rosenberger will be away for the fall semester and will be temporarily replaced by graduate student Katie Smith, who is currently pursuing a Master's in Mathematics at Pitt.

 

Math Tutoring Fall Hours

Wednesday: 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Thursday: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

 

 

Take Advantage of Career Counseling

 

CGS and veteran students can meet with career consultant Brianna McMeekin to discuss decisions involving their career and employment options.

 

One-on-one counseling and strategy sessions can help students with the following:

  1. Choosing an academic major by exploring their goals and strengths
  2. Finding internships and full-time employment
  3. Writing resumes and cover letters
  4. Making a career transition
  5. Other career opportunities and advice

 

Students can schedule an appointment during Brianna’s office hours by emailing her at bmm96@pitt.edu with their availability or by scheduling an appointment online through Handshake. Students may also visit Brianna during her walk-in hours, during which all appointment are 20 minutes long.

Brianna’s office is located at 1428 Posvar Hall, except on Tuesdays, where she can be found on the 2nd floor of the William Pitt Union.
