February @ the PBC

Happy new year to you!

After an incredible December and a huge send-off to 2022 on the last night of trading, we closed the doors, locked the gates and switched off. And I believe along with so many others here in our little community and around the world, a collective exhale was had.

This time, between Christmas and the new year beginning, felt again like it did when we were children. Humid & hot, festive and full of possibility and promise.

Our greens started to regenerate during this period thanks to the efforts of Graham, our greens keeper, Anna, one of our new directors & Nathan her partner. 2 Tonnes of premium topsoil went down along with seed and fertiliser. The soil was aerated, raked, fed and watered and the new grass has come up beautifully.

Sleepy January has now passed us and we are ready to dive head-first into the exciting year we have planned at the PBC.

2023, we're ready for ya.

READERS - Books and Conversations

Our BRAND NEW monthly series presented by Petersham Bowling Club & hosted by Michaela Kalowski.

Celebrating books and readers, this is a new monthly series of in-depth and relaxed conversations with authors about their latest work, and their body of work, their writing process and the ideas that inspire them.

Michaela Kalowski is an interviewer, moderator and curator for writers and ideas festivals. Highlight interviews include Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, Michelle de Kretser, Amos Oz, Stan Grant, Holly Ringland & Etgar Keret. She's the curator of ABC RN’s on-air writers festival, Big Weekend of Books, now in its 4th year. In 2022 she was curator of International Author events for Brisbane Writers Festival. Michaela has conducted radio interviews for ABC RN’s The Music Show, Big Ideas & The Bookshelf, ABC Classic and has presented programs across ABC radio.

February’s featured author: Richard Fidler

For more than a decade now Richard has been the voice on the airwaves with his in-depth, hour-long interview program on ABC RN. The Conversations podcast is the most popular in Australia, with more than six million program downloads a month.

In another life, Richard was a member of the confrontational music/comedy trio The Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS), which played to audiences all over the world: from the West End of London to the streets of Paris and New York, to isolated mining towns in outback Australia. He’s also the author of the bestselling books The Golden Maze (a history of Prague) and Ghost Empire (tracing the history of Istanbul and Constantinople), and co-author of the bestselling Saga Land with Kári Gíslason (a compendium of some of the best stories from Iceland).

His most recent book is The Book of Roads & Kingdoms: exploring the lives and stories of medieval wanderers who left medieval Baghdad to explore the furthest reaches of the known world. Part history and part travelogue, the stories in this book form a crazy quilt picture of a lost world. The book has had rave reviews and was recently shortlisted for the 2023 Indie Book Awards in the Non-Fiction category.

Tickets are $10.00 per person with doors opening at 8 pm.

Books books books!

This month's featured novel is by Junot Diaz.

"The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" is rendered with uncommon warmth and humour. it presents an astonishing vision of the endless human capacity to persevere - and to risk it all - in the name of love.

A literary triumph, this novel confirms Junot Diaz as one of the funniest, warmest and most exciting writers of our time.

Trivia Tuesdays

PBC Tuesday Trivia returns in 2023.

  • Do you know the difference between a capybara and a caipirinha?
  • Can you tell your Reginald Dwight from your Declan McManus?
  • Can you name all the countries which use the imperial system rather than metric?
  • Do you know which literary character has been played by Elizabeth Taylor, Kirsten Dunst and Florence Pugh?

All this intellectual ephemera and more may or may not come in handy when Tuesday Night Trivia returns for 2023.

We said a sad farewell to our beloved host Graham last year but fear not, new host Iain promises to keep the questions coming thick and fast in 2023.

Fun with friends - and cash prizes. Don't forget your gold coins for the jackpot round.

Round up your team and book your table for our Gala Premiere Limited Edition Opening Night on February 7th from 7:30.
