Journal of SociologyComing soon in the March issueThe Journal of Sociology is pleased to be able to present translated into English Georg Franck’s seminal essay, ‘The Economy of Attention’, which has been highly influential in German-language discussions of celebrity since it appeared in Merkur in 1993. The essay takes the analysis of the economics of attention in new directions, and adds depth and nuance to our understanding of the operations of the mass media and the logic of celebrity. Franck’s unique analysis will constitute an important conceptual resource for research innovations in the study of celebrity, the mass media, and the flow of information, knowledge and ideas. The essay has been translated by Robert van Krieken who also contributes a prefacing essay contextualising this work. The March edition also contains Anthony Elliott’s article on Mobilities 3.0. We feature two articles on Indigenous Australian topics, as well as work on egalitarianism, masculinities, loneliness, riots and cancer care. We have created the Looking for Work registry to provide a way for our members who are looking for work to connect with people looking to employ sociologists. We also acknowledge many of our members are employed precariously, and we hope this registry might help in building connections and networks towards more stable employment. The registry of sociologists looking for work can be accessed on TASAweb here. (Eds) (2019) Asian Migration and Education Cultures in the Anglosphere. Routledge. Asian migration and mobilities are transforming education cultures in the Anglosphere, prompting mounting debates about ‘tiger mothers’ and ‘dragon children’, and competition and segregation in Anglosphere schools. This book challenges the cultural essentialism which prevails in much academic and popular discussion of ‘Asian success’ and in relation to Asian education mobilities. As anxiety and aspiration within these spaces are increasingly ethnicised, the children of Asian migrants are both admired and resented for their educational success. This book explores popular perceptions of Asian migrant families through in-depth empirically informed accounts on the broader economic, social, historical and geo-political contexts within which education cultures are produced. This includes contributions from academics on global markets and national policies around migration and education, classed trajectories and articulations, local formations of ‘ethnic capital’, and transnational assemblages that produce education and mobility as means for social advancement.
