100 days to go until women’s ICC T20 World Cup

Perth’s leading female sports stars united at the WACA Ground on Wednesday, to mark 100 days until the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tournament kicks off on February 21, 2020. Netball star Verity Charles from West Coast Fever, AFLW stars Ange Stannett from the Fremantle Dockers and Dana Hooker from the West Coast Eagles joined Perth Scorchers captain Meg Lanning, and fellow Scorchers player and England player, Amy Jones, at the sporting ground to throw their support behind the Women’s T20 World Cup. Tourism WA successfully bid to host five women’s T20 World Cup matches, which will be held at the historic WACA Ground over three days from February 22, 2020. Nine of the 10 teams playing in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tournament will be coming to Perth in February 2020. Tourism’s stars shine bright on awards night

Busselton Jetty struck gold on the weekend at the 2019 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards, presented by Tourism Council of WA. The popular attraction won the prestigious Sir David Brand Award for Tourism, recognised for its continuous innovation and commitment to constant development. The jetty also took out gold in the Major Tourist Attractions and Ecotourism categories. Field of Light: Avenue of Honour and CinefestOZ Film Festival were among the Tourism WA-sponsored events and festivals to score gold at the Awards, which this year received a record number of entries from Western Australian tourism businesses. Sandalford Wines, Beach House at Bayside, Crown College and Mandurah Crab Fest were inducted into the Hall of Fame, after each winning gold in their category consecutively over the past three years. Delicious debut for WA Gourmet Escape

The new Western Australia Gourmet Escape made its debut on Friday night in the Swan Valley; one of the expanded format’s new locations. Hardcore carnivore Jess Pryles kicked things off with her Tex Mex Takeover while renowned chef Marco Pierre White shared his thoughts on the future of food at a sold out event. The two joined other culinary luminaries at the Feast Fire Pit at Gourmet Feast in the Valley on the weekend to showcase local, seasonal produce. The new business networking stream of Western Australia Gourmet Escape, The World Gourmet Symposium, is on today at Mandoon Estate, while sophisticated dining experiences with international visiting chefs took place in some our city’s finest restaurants throughout the week. Perth gripped by Fed Cup fever

Perth was gripped by Fed Cup fever over the weekend as France and Australia did battle at RAC Arena for the Final of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas. Fans were treated to a thrilling final of the world’s biggest teams’ event for women, with the result coming down to a doubles decider on Sunday. Ultimately, the French pairing of Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia proved too good for the Australian partnership of world number one Ashleigh Barty and team mate Samantha Stosur. Tourism WA sponsored the final, which attracted a total attendance of 26,951 over the two days – a national attendance record for a Fed Cup tie.

 

Perth City lights up over festive season to welcome more visitors

Premier Mark McGowan has helped spark the beginning of the City of Perth's festive season, with the announcement of a $685,000 Lotterywest grant towards the City of Perth. The funding is for three events over summer, the Christmas Lights Trail ($150,000), New Year's Eve celebrations ($100,000) and 2020 Australia Day Skyworks ($435,000). The three events will activate Perth and encourage up to 300,000 people to visit the city centre, filling local retail shops, bars and restaurants, supporting local jobs and providing a boost to the economy. Shark Bay and Lake Hillier in US media

Francois Peron National Park in world heritage-listed Shark Bay has been included in a Conde Nast Traveler article of four Aboriginal tourism experiences in Australia, reaching a total unique monthly audience of 3.5 million. Esperance’s pink Lake Hillier was also featured to Insider readers in an article highlighting one of the world’s greatest natural phenomena. Insider has an audience of 14,000. Collie on track with new nature tourism business

Collie is gearing up to become a premier adventure tourism town, with the State Government supporting new tour agency TraaVerse as part of its investment in driving visitation to the area. TraaVerse will be forging a new path in expanding nature-based tourism opportunities in the Collie River Valley, with funding from the Collie Futures Small Grants Program being put towards the establishment of the business. A shuttle bus service will transport visitors to and from trails such as the Bibbulmun and Munda Biddi, and custom tour options will be available. New Tourism WA Board member

Businessman Bruce Davis has been appointed to Tourism Western Australia's Board for a one-year term. The founder and managing director of InGlobo Private Equity, Mr Davis has previously held senior management roles across a range of companies including Leisure and Allied Industries, Coca-Cola AMATIL and McDonalds Australia.  He is currently serving on three boards and is Chairman of the Bethanie Group Board of Directors, the Director of Bethanie Housing Limited and Director of the Integrated Industrial Proprietary Limited.  Mr Davis has a significant consumer marketing background and also brings diverse international experience including as global director of the Young Presidents' Organisation from 2015 to 2018. His appointment fills the final available position on Tourism WA's Board and brings the total number of commissioners to 10.

 

2020 Western Australian Heritage Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Western Australian Heritage Awards. The awards celebrate those working to promote heritage tourism and interpretation. Nominations in the heritage tourism category may be a walking tour, historic trail, festival, event, bed and breakfast, hotel, accommodation, cruise or performance. Visit the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage’s website to find out more, including information on the award categories and criteria as well as how to submit a nomination. Nominations close on Friday December 13, 2019.

 

Tourism WA wins ANZ Campaign of the year

Tourism Western Australia has won the ANZ Campaign of the year in the 2019 Expedia Group Media Solutions Partner Awards for a Brand Partnership campaign run in the Singapore market in late 2018. Expedia Group Media Solutions’ campaign with Tourism Western Australia was designed to promote Perth to Singaporean travellers. The campaign was jointly supported by Expedia Group and Tourism Western Australia and involved a co-branded TV activation, designed to highlight exciting things on offer in Perth and drive booking demand though Expedia.com.sg. To complement the advertisement, Expedia Group Media Solutions implemented a digital conversion strategy, using a range of digital display advertising, along with email and social marketing tools.

 

Statement on tourism land uses in bushfire prone areas

The Western Australian Planning Commission has released a position statement to guide local governments in planning for tourism land uses within bushfire prone areas. Position Statement: Tourism Land Uses in Bushfire Prone Areas introduces a range of measures to ensure bushfire risk is considered appropriately. The position statement is effective immediately in determining planning applications until a revised policy is in place. A Guide to Developing a Bushfire Emergency Evacuation Plan and a Bushfire Emergency Evacuation Plan Template have also been prepared to help local governments prepare for emergency evacuation plans. Tourism operator scam alert

There are recent reports of a scam targeting tourism operators in Western Australia. Emails asking operators to click or phone to confirm bookings are being sent out and this leads to a website requesting payment. These emails are designed to appear as if they are from Tourism WA or another State Tourism Organisation. If you have received an email of this type then it can just be deleted. As a reminder, Tourism WA does not charge operators to be listed on its website.

 

New Holiday in WA Campaign

Tourism Council WA has launched a marketing campaign promote Quality Tourism Accredited Businesses. The campaign, Holiday in WA, will prompt consumers to look for the Quality Tourism Accredited Business logo when planning their holidays, and to book directly with your business. A new Holiday in WA consumer website is being developed, where eligible Quality Tourism Accredited Businesses will be listed. To prepare your business for this marketing campaign, visit the Trust the Tick website to ensure your business is listed and your information is up to date. Call for Abstracts for the World Indigenous Tourism Summit

The third World Indigenous Tourism Summit is being held in Perth in April 2020 and a call for abstracts is now open until December 13.  Organised by the Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC), and hosted by Tourism WA, the summit is expected to attract hundreds of delegates from around Australia and the world. The summit theme is “Tourism and Indigenous Earth Wisdom – Weaving the Future that Benefits All”. The theme will focus on key areas of Aboriginal tourism, including Youth, Environment, Culture, Aboriginal led research, Government best practice and the Business of Tourism.  The abstract topic areas are available to view here and you can register here to receive regular updates on the program.

 

Change of date – WA Japan Roadshow

WA Japan Roadshow, which will now take place in Japan between February 24 and 29, 2020, is a premier trade event for WA tourism products and services to engage with key Japanese travel companies. There will be a range of events throughout the week, providing an opportunity to network and engage with wholesale planners, salespeople, major agencies, local travel agencies, MICE sales, online travel agencies and land operators in Tokyo and Osaka. Registrations will open late in November. In the meantime, please email your Expression of Interest by November 15, 2019.

 

Regional event holders encouraged to apply for funding

Upcoming regional events could be eligible for a funding boost as part of Tourism WA's annual Regional Events Scheme. Event holders have until mid-December to submit their application for the 2020-21 funding round, which supports smaller and emerging regional events across the State. A total funding pool of $1 million is available, including a separate pool of $150,000 allocated to the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme (RAES). The RAES is exclusively for events that deliver Aboriginal activities and experiences through the leadership and participation of Aboriginal people. To be eligible for either scheme, events must be held between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 with event holders able to make a funding submission for between $5,000 and $40,000. Perth and Regional WA Japan Ready Workshops

November/December: Due to overwhelming demand, Tourism Council WA has scheduled Japan Ready Workshops in Australia’s South West on November 27 and Perth on December 4 to assist WA tourism businesses become ready to service the growing Japanese market. This comprehensive workshop will cover an overview of the Japanese market, Japanese service and cultural awareness, translation requirements, food service requirements, welcoming Japanese groups including students and MICE, key commercial considerations and engagement through sales and marketing. Learn to be a tour guide with Global Gypsies

November 19: Global Gypsies is running a one-day Tour Guide Training Course in conjunction with Tourism Council WA. Designed for working or aspiring guides, or for entrepreneurs keen to start their own tourism businesses, the course combines presentations, anecdotes, group discussions and a creative workshop. Topics will include interpretive presentation, duty of care, risk management, dealing with emergencies, leadership, cultural awareness, environmental responsibility, conflict resolution, customer service, starting your own tourism business, job opportunities and more. Workshops to welcome industry on board

November 22: The Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association will be running a number of workshops in partnership with Australia’s South West in November to support industry in understanding some of the opportunities available as part of the direct flights between Melbourne and Busselton which start next March.
