Statement on End-of-Life Choices and Palliative Care
It is evident that end-of-life care in Western Australia cannot continue with the status quo. It is also clear that improving the care and experiences of patients at the end of life extends far beyond the narrow scope of a euthanasia debate.
The issues of end-of-life care and assisted dying are currently at the centre of debate in Australia.
Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) will be legalised in Victoria from mid-2019, while the NSW Bill was narrowly defeated in late 2017.
In Western Australia, a Joint Select Committee was established in August 2017 to inquire and report on the need for laws in our State to allow citizens to make informed decisions regarding their own end of life choices.

New industrial agreements survey
The AMA (WA) will commence negotiations for new industrial agreements that cover:
• All doctors in training employed in the WA Health System
• All senior doctors employed in the WA Health System
• All doctors employed by St John of God Health Care in WA
• All Clinical Academics employed under the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners (Clinical Academics) – AMA Agreement 2016
Negotiations formally commence in early 2019 and will cover salaries, allowances, working hours, leave provisions and other entitlements. In preparation for the upcoming negotiations, the AMA (WA) has developed member surveys, designed to help the AMA (WA) identify issues that need improvement and gather data to assist in the negotiation process.
If you are employed in the WA Health System or by St John of God Health Care, your response to these surveys provides a key component of the AMA (WA)’s industrial advocacy and helps secure improved conditions and entitlements. Previously the AMA (WA) has used this data to successfully advocate for increased wages, improved working conditions and greater access to leave and professional development.
All AMA (WA) members who are employed in the WA Health System or by SGJHC were sent an email on Wednesday 8 August 2018 with a link to a survey. Clinical Academics were sent an email with a link to their survey on 16 August 2018. If you haven’t already done so, please complete the survey.
Haven’t received an email from the AMA (WA)?
Please check your junk mail or span folder. Email membership@amawa.com.au to request a link to the appropriate survey.
