MYAN WA - Conversation with Education

Don't miss our next MYAN WA micro session coming up next week!

The message from young people and those that support them is that is that education is one of the most important issues for refugee and migrant youth. But are we getting it right?

We have invited Movi Naidoo, Principal Consultant Literacy and Numeracy at the Department of Education for a chat and discussion over coffee. This is the perfect opportunity for you to ask questions about what support is provided for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds within the school system. It is also a chance for the Department of Education to hear your thoughts about what's working, what isn't and what needs to change.

When: Tuesday 22 September, 10am to 11am

Where: Foyer Oxford, 196 Oxford St, Leederville

Places are strictly limited to 20. Book here to secure your spot.

Survey of CALD young people

The Commissioner for Children and Young People, Jenny Perkins, is currently undertaking a peer-led consultation in partnership with the Youth Affairs Council of WA focused on gathering the views of young people from non-English speaking backgrounds, such as refugees or recent migrants, about the opportunities and challenges in their lives and their access to support.

To support the face-to-face consultations and enable any CALD child or young person in WA to participate in the consultation and have a say, Jenny has released an online survey.

Views contributed via the survey will help better understand the issues affecting CALD children and young people.

Please promote this important survey through your networks and in your community.

More information about the project is available here.

Call for papers

The call for presentations has been extended to 30 September. This ground-breaking conference proposes to explore the concept of language, literacy and numeracy education as a process of exchanging ways of being. It is concerned with how the learning experience can enable students and teachers of diverse backgrounds to learn from one another, and, in the process, develop effective competencies in a common language.

Congratulations MMRC

Congratulations to Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre (MMRC) WA who was the winner of the Settlement Innovation award for their 'Sharing Stories' program at the 2015 Australian Migration and Settlement Awards.

The awards were held at Parliament House in Canberra last month, celebrating the work of individuals and organisations who foster social cohesion and support migrants and refugees to settle, feel included and participate in Australia.

Surveys

Delayed citizenship applications

The Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) has been hearing about people with a permanent refugee visa having their citizenship application delayed by the Immigration Department.

If you have a permanent refugee visa and have made a citizenship application we would like to hear from you. Please complete this survey to help us better understand this issue.

Visa cancellations on character grounds

The Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) is concerned about reports of a recent significant increase in the number of visa cancellations based on character grounds, particularly following recent changes in legislation.

If you have personally worked on any visa cancellation cases since December 2014, please complete this short survey.

Resources

Family Safety Pack

The Australian Government has developed a family safety pack with information on Australia’s laws regarding domestic and family violence, sexual assault and forced marriage.

The pack aims to reduce violence against women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, by ensuring they understand their rights and where to get support if needed. It also aims to strengthen support for women coming to Australia on a Partner Visa, by providing information on the family violence visa provisions and available support.
