IoT Reality Check |
As we head into what I believe could be a watershed year for IoT, I think it’s appropriate to look back at some of the visionaries, trailblazers, and pioneers who have led us to this moment. From the beginning, IoT has challenged technology, business, and cultural paradigms—moving us to break down silos, driving us to create new standards, and impelling us to create broad, open ecosystems of partners to bring IoT to fruition. In this
issue, you can read my tribute to some of the IoT pioneers who have brought us this far, and get glimpses of new trends and pioneering changes from the next generation of IoT innovators.

In Other Words |
Our guest writers exemplify the traits of industrial IoT pioneers—vision, imagination, execution. Investments in startups from McRock Capital’s Scott MacDonald and Whitney Rockley address many of IoT’s adoption challenges. Schneider’s Nicolas Windpassinger, who just released, “The Internet of Things: Digitize or Die,” thinks IoT’s future hinges on the willingness of an organization’s leaders and middle managers to examine their digital shortcomings and do something about it. –MK What do you think? |

Just the Facts Please |
The term “Internet of Things” is less than two decades old—but its roots go back at least a century. Take a walk along the road to IoT, accompanied by visionaries like Nikola Tesla, who in 1926 envisioned that wireless technology would convert the whole earth into a huge brain. Or Hubert Upton, who invented the first wearable computer in 1967. I’ve enjoyed browsing these IoT histories and timelines to see how we got here. –MK What do you think? |
