Wine of the Weekend

Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2017

Cabernet day just slipped by on Tuesday, September 3rd and if you didn’t know about it, there is no time like the present to catch up on the great Cabernet wines that are around these days! “Cab is King” is the industry saying, succinctly wrapping up the world’s love for this grape. From the hundreds available, we recommend you start with Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2017. It’s a textbook example of what Chile does with this grape and is a fabulous bargain as well!

Tasting Notes: Balance is the name of the game here. Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon is dry and focuses on cassis, black currant fruit and oak spices. Its well-structured balance between zesty acidity and gripping tannins frames the wine and holds through the long finish.

Enjoy With: Burgers and grilled meats (don’t put away the barbeque yet!) as well as strong hard cheeses or just sipping on its own.

Style: A dry, medium-bodied, fruity red wine.

Terroir/Region: Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Colchagua Valley, the heart of Chile’s red wine production. This famous valley is characterized by its geography, its great diversity of soils and Mediterranean climate. Cool nights and gentle breezes from the Pacific and the Andes make this region an ideal location for the production of high-end red varieties.

Producer: Caliterra was founded in 1996 as a partnership between the Mondavi family of California (yes, that Mondavi family) and the iconic Errazuriz family of Chile with the goal of expressing the potential quality of Chilean wine. The Errazuriz family eventually took over the winery and became fully engaged with the regions and people involved. By implementing social and environmental initiatives on their lands and those around their vineyards, it has truly made a wine that is sustainably sourced, for the sake of the communities as well as the land.

Availability: Caliterra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2017 can be found year-round in the Chile section of your local LCBO and is available for online ordering and home delivery. They also make a great Sauvignon Blanc, so getting one of each could be in order!
