CGS Outstanding Student of the Year

Paul Kantner, a junior in the College of General Studies and an active duty United States Marine, received the 2013 CGS Outstanding Student of the Year Award for his exemplary leadership, scholarship, and community service.

Paul enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005. He enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh after being accepted into the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program, a highly selective Marine Corps scholastic program that gives enlisted Marines the opportunity to achieve a four-year college degree and earn a commission. With Gratitude on Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, Americans honor the memory of those who have died in service to our country---not just in generations past, but within our families, among our friends, and from our own communities today. As we honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, we also thank the service members who continue to make sacrifices everyday---working long hours, leaving their families for months at a time, missing holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries, and putting their lives on the line---in defense of our freedom. The Office of Veterans Services offers our deepest thanks to the brave volunteers who serve our country, and honors those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we hold dear.

Pat's Run Recap

It was cold and windy the morning of April 20 but Pat’s Run was a success! Fifty runners and walkers participated in the Ninth Annual Pat’s Shadow Run to raise money for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which supports educational scholarships for veterans, active service members, and their families. It was a great atmosphere and a beautiful course, running past the David L. Lawrence Convention Center along the Allegheny River. There was a post-event picnic supplied by donations from runners and volunteers. Thank you to all who came out in support of a great event. The Office of Veterans Services looks forward to continuing its support of the veteran community in the greater Pittsburgh area. Thank you to the Steel City Vets for all they did to make this event such a success and a special thanks to Ben Keen, their President and Founder. More>
