Taste of Elk Grove

The Rotary Club of Laguna Sunrise presents the 5th Annual Taste of Elk Grove food festival, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Asian Sports Foundation facility (9040 High Tech Ct.) in Elk Grove. Eating Green!
We all know that eating leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale is good for us. But today I want to talk about eating “green” — choosing foods that are good for you and the environment. Here are a few tips on environmentally sound eating.
- Eat in Season and Locally: Sticking to our region’s growing cycles is an eco-friendly move because it requires fewer imports, and therefore less fuel will be used for the food’s journey to you. And most likely the produce will be picked at the peak of ripeness and nutritional high – more good news for you.
- Consider Organic: For fruits and other produce such as peaches, strawberries and celery, choosing organic will help lessen the use and impact of pesticides on the environment. Some research also suggests that certain organic produce may have slightly higher nutrient content than conventionally grown.
- Select Responsible Labels: More companies are reducing their impact on the environment by using recycled packaging materials, or just using less packaging all together. Environmentally responsible products are growing in numbers, and by purchasing them we take a step toward protecting the earth.
