New Jersey’s long journey to legalize recreational adult-use marijuana remains mired in what is rapidly becoming a standoff between the governor and the Legislature. Just as it seemed Gov. Phil Murphy’s office and the state Legislature had come to an agreement that would end a years-long struggle to legalize marijuana in New Jersey, opposition from lawmakers has derailed the effort in another bizarre twist in the saga. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin has named his pick to serve on the Cannabis Regulatory Commission which will oversee legal marijuana in New Jersey, selecting a former Verizon executive who has also served in the Marines. In 2021, employers will need to review their policies and ensure that they comply with evolving laws, particularly those covering medical marijuana patients. President-elect Joe Biden built part of his political career on being known as a fighter in the “war on drugs,” supporting legislation as a senator that set harsh penalties for some drug offenses. As of January 2021, 13 states allow marijuana use by adults while 36 states allow marijuana use for medical purposes.
