Good morning.  Do you remember why you joined this industry?  In our fast paced and grinding world of senior living and skilled nursing, it's easy to get caught up in the daily demands and complexities of the job. But, have you ever paused to recall what motivated you to join this industry in the first place? Understanding and reconnecting with your initial inspiration can be a powerful tool for reinvigorating your passion and enhancing your leadership skills.

 

 

Remember Your Why

At its core, skilled nursing and senior living is about compassion and care. It’s about making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals who need it most.

It’s about showing up for the residents and employees who would have nowhere else and no one else to turn.

You and your teams quite literally save lives every day.  What more could you ask for from a profession?  What purpose could be any more important?

Reflecting on these core values can often reignite the flame that first drew you to this profession.

If you’re having trouble holding onto that passion and remembering your why, you’re not alone.

Here are a few things that help me connect back to my passion.

  • Connect to your roots:  Revisit the role, job, or tasks that ignited your passion and lured you in to begin with.  If that was Social Work, then clear your schedule for a week and roll up your sleeves with your social work team.  Put yourself in that familiar routine and allow the memories and resident connections to take over.
  • Get outside:  The weather is starting to turn as we enter Spring and spending time outside at communities and centers always helps me to reconnect and gain a fresh perspective.  Plan walks into your day and get outside or off campus for 1:1s and other team connections.
  • Switch up the routine: Change your working hours.  Switch up your meeting and rounding schedule or locations.  I once worked with an NHA who would move the location of the stand-up meeting every week.  One time we had stand-up in the boiler room and he had our maintenance team explain the various pieces of equipment.  10 years later I still remember it.
  • Tee up a win:  Hold a contest, plan a community event, or choose a recent milestone.  Whatever it is, find a reason and a way to celebrate a win with your team.  Build the momentum.
