In November, we wrote about a lawsuit filed against Amazon by a New Jersey man claiming he was wrongfully terminated due to a failed marijuana drug test despite being a patient in the state’s medical marijuana program. With roughly 2,000 people registering every month, New Jersey’s briskly growing medicinal marijuana program needs more participation from doctors, more product options and more information about which strains actually work for patients. Now that marijuana is legal in Illinois, there is a concern regarding employment. A tremendous gray area surrounds the legalization of marijuana and its impact on the workplace. The use of illicit drugs is increasing in the workplace, and marijuana is leading the way. If workers have access to medical marijuana, they could be less likely to file a worker’s compensation claim. California voters legalized pot in 2016. But for many seeking jobs in state government, cannabis use has become an obstacle to getting hired. Safety advocacy groups are pushing state and federal governments to implement policies that would prevent school bus drivers from being drunk or on drugs while driving, putting students’ lives in danger.
