Wine of the Weekend

Yvon Mau Merlot, VdP de l’Aude

After a brief respite from the bitter cold, temperatures are dropping below normal across Ontario again this weekend, so if you want to hunker down at home with a nice bottle of sunny French wine, we have an excellent choice for you. Yvon Mau Merlot brings its sunny, south of France disposition to warm your home while it’s cool outside. This cheerful, delicious wine is perfect to share with friends by the fire from either a 750mL or 1.5L bottle.

Tasting Notes:  This delightful Merlot has a bright and fruity nose with aromas of cherry and raspberry that envelop the senses. The palate is smooth and nicely balanced with red berry flavours at the forefront. Cocoa-like tannins combine with ripe jammy fruit for a very pleasant, clean finish with good length.

Enjoy With:  A warm, casual meal such as pizza, pasta or burgers.

Style:  Medium-bodied and fruity red wine.

Terroir/Region:  Vin de Pays de l’Aude, located in the far south-west of France in the Languedoc-Roussillon, is a rather large wine region that encompasses a number of important wine appellations. The landscape is rugged, rocky and full of vineyards. Mediterranean sunshine is tempered by cool air from the Pyrenees which keep vines healthy and productive.

Producer:  Founded in 1897 by Aristide Mau, Yvon Mau has over a century’s worth of expertise in the wine business. Originally focused as a negociant for Bordeaux wines, the company also now produces wines in different regions of France. Yvon Mau, the son of the founder, would cycle around France on his penny-farthing trying to find the best wines the country had to offer. To this day, Yvon Mau is a big name in French wines with the same dedication to quality.

Availability:  Yvon Mau Merlot is available in two sizes year-round in the France section of the LCBO.
