QLDC Winter Road Report - 18 September 2023

Knock knock Queenstown Lakes,

Who’s there you say? Snow...
Snow who? Snow way! It’s another week of Winter Road Reports. Happy days.

Speaking of snow, we did get a light dusting on the Crown Range summit overnight, otherwise it’s looking like we’ve got another wet grey day ahead of us. Please keep speeds down, fog lights on in areas of low visibility and drive to the conditions.

Roading crews have been out patrolling with grit and  plough trucks since the early hours. We have reports of high winds especially in Whakatipu Basin so be sure to grab your winter coat if out and about.

Here's a summary of conditions to be aware of today:

  • Crown Range Road & Cardrona Valley:  Wet roads through Cardrona Valley and SNOW has fallen over the Crown Range summit which is sitting at 2 degrees. This has been cleared and grit applied. There will be a chance of ice at daybreak so drive with caution.
  • Wānaka area: Hāwea and Wānaka have wet roads and mild temperatures. Be aware there could be icy areas travelling from Wānaka to Makarora on SH6.
  • Queenstown and Whakatipu Basin: Wet roads and strong winds.
  • Glenorchy: Wet roads and positive temperatures.
  • Out of district: Wet roads due to overnight rain. Lindis Pass is sitting between 6 and 9 degrees with mild winds.

So I’m taking a break from fun facts about snow loving critters and moving on to winter inspired jokes this week – let me preface this by saying there were a lot of bad ones to wade through to find these gems. Here’s a cracker to kick start the day.

What do superheroes put in their drinks?
Just-ice.

If you do spot any issues on the roads this morning, give us a call on 03 441 0499.

Keep smiling,
Tessa

DISCLAIMER:  Road conditions during winter can change at any time. Our advice is to always carry chains, slow down and drive to the conditions. We will always do our best to give you the most up-to-date conditions for key commuter roads, but we can't drive every road in the district before 7.00am.  Remember, if it's snowing, this slows us down too and these reports should never replace common sense.
