Dear friend, The end of March wrapped up National Nutrition Month. We want to take the time to reflect on the profound impact that health and nutrition have on our community. At Lift UP, we're dedicated to more than just providing meals; we're committed to nourishing our community's health by addressing the root causes of health disparities, anchored in the social determinants of health. These are the conditions under which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, as defined by the CDC, and include crucial issues like food insecurity. Food insecurity means not having reliable access to sufficient, affordable, nutritious food, and it's a challenge that affects both physical and mental health. It's a multifaceted issue, influenced by factors beyond poverty, such as economic stability, housing, and social isolation. At Lift UP, we've witnessed the significant difference that access to nutritious food can make in people's lives. "Before coming to Preston's Pantry, I hadn't had fruits and veggies for three years. They're too expensive on SNAP," shared one grateful pantry shopper. "The quality of the produce is awesome. Since I started coming here, I've been eating a lot healthier," said another, highlighting the positive impact our services have on nutrition. These testimonies are at the heart of what we do. Last year, nearly 50% of shoppers at Preston's Pantry visited for the first time, underscoring the growing need for access to healthy food options. Through your support, we're able to meet this need and more, with 93% of pantry shoppers reporting that the food they receive from Lift UP enables them to take better care of their health. The benefits of our work extend beyond physical health, also touching on mental well-being as well. "To be without food is a lonely and difficult place," shared one shopper, highlighting the emotional toll of food insecurity. Another added, "Because of health reasons, I am on a fixed income. To know I have my food needs met means I can spread my thin resources to cover bills and maybe even enjoy the theatre every now and then. It helps me feel human." Food intersects with numerous challenges our community encounters. With your support, we can keep offering relief and catering to the comprehensive health needs of our community.
