Dear Residents,

Thank you to everyone who attended the Strathfield Massacre Commemoration on Monday morning. It may have rained for most of the ceremony, but that didn’t stop the large number of people from turning out to remember and pay respects to the 7 people who lost their lives on that tragic day, 17 August 1991. It is heartwarming to see the memorial surrounded with wreaths and flowers as we recommit ourselves to a safer tomorrow.

I’m pleased to announce that Strathfield Council is partnering with the City of Canada Bay Council to help residents recycle more. Strathfield Council residents will now be able to use the Community Recycling Centre in Five Dock for free! All your hard-to-recycle items including paint, batteries, oils and more can be dropped off at the Centre Tuesday – Saturday. Recycling not only benefits the environment, it cuts down on waste in your red bin and prolongs the use of landfills. Check out the website today and start planning your clean out.

Following feedback from our community, Council has revised the proposal for Chinese Lanterns in Homebush West (Flemington) Town Centre. A new, smaller proposal for seven lanterns mounted to existing poles, with the fairy lights retained, is now on public exhibition. Head to the Have Your Say page to give your feedback.

See Bluey and Bingo and Enjoy the Amazing Range of Activities and Entertainment Waiting For You at This Year's Strathfield Spring Festival 😀

Wackadoo! Bluey and her little sister Bingo are heading to Strathfield Spring Festival on Saturday 5 September – for real life! 

To make the day even more amazing, Council has also prepared an amazing line up of rides, activities and family entertainment that will excite kids of all ages! For our little locals there will be a kids gardening activity, petting zoo, pony rides, jumping castle, and free face painting! And for teens, we will have a fun parkour workshop, laser tag, stunt jump, and even a ninja run obstacle course! 

To top it all off, we will have an exciting line-up of local stage entertainment, along with delicious food trucks, carnival rides and market stalls.

It's set to be a fantastic day out for the whole family, and we are already counting down the days until we see you on Saturday 5 September from 10am.

Premier George Reid’s Kangaroo

One of the more unusual residents of The Boulevarde, Strathfield during the late 1800s was a pet kangaroo belonging to none other than the Premier of NSW! George Reid was then in residence at Woodside, a large property on the corner of Woodside Avenue, demolished in 1930. One day in late 1898 the kangaroo escaped into the neighbour’s property.

It was caught by the gardeners who tried to lift it back over the fence. Premier Reid arrived on the scene in his pyjamas to assist when the kangaroo’s claw became stuck in his clothes, shredding both pyjamas and dignity.
