June 24, 2024 LFP facility-based care billing launches today

Doctors of BC and BC Family Doctors continue to work with the Ministry of Health to refine and improve the Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) Payment Model. We continue to listen to your feedback and adjust the payment model to address your concerns. To submit questions or feedback, please email FP.Billing@doctorsofbc.ca

In this newsletter, we are providing information on the following:

  • Start of facility-based care billing
  • Supports for facility-based care billing
  • Reminder to submit LFP Panel Payment claim form
  • Upcoming deadline to claim PAS Registry Payments

Start of billing for facility-based care
Today, eligible family physicians can start billing under the LFP Payment Model for facility-based care. This means the June 24, 2024 LFP Payment Schedule is now in effect. We recommend that you review the payment schedule in full, even if you do not provide facility-based care.

The beginning of facility-based billing represents a monumental amount of work and sets a record in BC for the number of codes added to MSP/Teleplan at a single time. As a result, we expect that there may be some billing challenges in the first few days and weeks. We ask for your patience as we work through potential issues. Please know that we will be working with the Ministry to identify any issues that may arise and assist with resolving them as soon as possible.

Some EMRs might be delayed
We know some EMRs and billing systems are still working on updates.

  • Follow your regular process for updating the fee codes in your EMR and work with your vendor as needed. For example, Intrahealth Profile users need to run an MSP fee update to get the new codes.
  • If your EMR or billing system does not recognize the new LFP billing codes, please contact your EMR vendor or billing provider directly.
  • If they are unable to resolve the issue, please contact MSP/Health Insurance BC.

You may need to wait to submit your billing for a few days while your EMR or billing system is being updated.

Supporting you with billing
Learning new billing codes can take some time. To support you with this, BC Family Doctors’ billing tools have been restructured and updated.

  • The Simplified LFP Guide provides a plain language guide of the new time and interaction codes, written by the same physicians and staff who co-developed the payment schedule with the Ministry of Health.
  • The Billing Question Library has more than a hundred new billing FAQs with detailed information on all areas of billing under the payment model.
  • An overview of the major changes for clinic-based billing has been written for your review.
  • Compensation calculators for all areas of care have been updated to reflect the latest information.

These resources are available in the members section of the BC Family Doctors website. If you are not yet a member, you can join BC Family Doctors at any time.

The compensation calculators and additional information can also be found on the Doctors of BC website.

Remember that you don’t have to navigate this change alone. Reach out to the Billing Support team for help: FP.Billing@doctorsofbc.ca

Please note that the Doctors of BC and BC Family Doctors’ offices will be closed from June 28 and reopening July 2.

Reminder: Submit your 2024 LFP Panel Payment claim form

Physicians enrolled in the LFP Payment Model must submit an online form once per year to claim the panel payment for the year.

To receive panel payment installments by August 31, the 2024 LFP Panel Payment claim form must be submitted by July 19, 2024. Instructions on how to claim the 2024 panel payment were emailed to individual physicians in March and June 2024.

If you did not submit the claim form earlier this year, you can submit it now. If you submit it by July 19, you can receive your first quarter and second quarter installments on August 31.

Detailed FAQs about panel payments can be found in the BC Family Doctors Billing Question Library (login required).

Reminder: Deadline to claim PAS Registry Payments

Did you complete the PAS Registry Payment requirements by March 31, 2024? Remember to submit your PAS Panel Registry Payment or Clinic and Provider Registry Payment claim by the June 30, 2024 deadline.

Submission Code A must be included on all claims submitted between May 1 – June 30, 2024 to ensure that they are not rejected. Learn more on the Doctors of BC PAS payment information web page or in our PAS Registry Payment FAQs.
