This provincial newsletter shares practical, adaptable strategies and ideas among medical staff associations (MSAs), physicians, project teams, and health authority partners. How are we engaging for system impact? Read about strategies to improve hospital overcapacity, patient quality, and patient transportation for system impact. Includes two physician video presentations from Facility Engagement's Peer to Peer Round Table session held on Sept. 25, 2023. Identifying the real impacts of long stay patients on hospital overcapacity Dr Barb Kane is leading a collaborative Northern Health regional project that has validated a common issue: long-stay patients waiting for community services or beds significantly contribute to overcapacity in their hospitals. It is a daily issue that impacts patient access to emergency, surgical, and other services. Dr Kane shares insights, actions, and a data tool for other sites and health authorities to consider. From idea to spread: Preventing preterm births pathway Drs Jennifer Kask and Kirsten Duckitt are engaging healthcare providers on Vancouver Island and beyond to utilize a simple medical intervention with at-risk patients to prevent preterm births, a leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. The pathway can be used for patients across BC, with additional benefits for families living in smaller communities without higher levels of care. Engaging to improve patient transportation in the East Kootenays A regional Facility Engagement committee spanning five hospitals has brought together MSAs, Interior Health, and stakeholder organizations to understand patient transportation issues, and establish an effective, common voice for grassroots action. One area of focus is to enhance the capacity of rural sites to provide care for complex patients and reduce the need for transfers. How are you engaging for system impact?
