This is because it ‘celebrates’ a painful part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history. Australia Day celebrations have long been a hot topic at this time of the year. Did you know?
What did happen on the 26 January 1788? This was the day Captain Arthur Phillip landed on Australian soil with the first fleet of British Ships. He raised the British flag at Sydney Cove to claim NSW as a British Colony. This day marks the beginning of a long and brutal colonisation of people and land. To many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, there is little to celebrate, and it is a commemoration of a deep loss – loss of sovereign rights to their land, loss of family, loss of the right to practice their culture. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples the colonisation of Australia was the beginning of massacres, loss of culture and land and the start of years of discrimination and oppression. Watch below the ABC interviewing First Nations people s they reflect on what Australia Day means to them. The Australian Government are taking steps to instate Constitutional Recognition in parliament for First Nations people. ![]() Constitutional recognition through a Voice to Parliament is a body enshrined in the Constitution that would enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide advice to the Parliament on policies and projects that impact their lives. A Voice to Parliament gives the Australian Government the opportunity to make policies with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, rather than for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. To find out more about what the Voice to Parliament is, please visit From the Heart or the Uluru Dialogue to find great educational resources. ![]() YOU CAN GO NOW! @ Dendy Cinema's SouthportOn screen from Thursday 26th January This title is rated M (Coarse language and crude sexual humor) You Can Go Now is a 2023 Australian documentary film directed by Larissa Behrendt About the filmRichard Bell. It's normal to experience difficult and complex emotions in the face of difficult and complex decisions. How can you harness these emotions to help you make better choices? It's all about "emotional bookending." Start by identifying the exact decision you need to make. Are you hiring someone? Firing someone? Reshuffling your team? Name the decision — then identify exactly how you feel about it. What is the dominant emotion? Is it fear? Anxiety? A sense of being overwhelmed, or perhaps excitement, about the opportunity ahead? Naming your feelings can help create a little space between emotions and actions. Next, visualize how you might feel on the other side of the decision. Do you imagine a sense of accomplishment or relief? Or is there still some anxiety there? Projecting the emotions you'll feel in the wake of your decision can help you untangle the discomfort you're feeling in the face of it — and help you move into your future with clarity and confidence.
