![]() MPI Trade Certification MPI Trade Certification, our new online certification system, is now live. Wine e-Cert is read-only, and you need to use MPI Trade Certification to request export documents for New Zealand grape wine and Official Organic Assurances for organic products to Great Britain.
For general information about the Future of Certification programme, please visit the Replacing our trade certification systems webpage. Chemistry testing for Japan and China MPI does not provide official assurances for exports to Japan and China. MPI considers Japan and China a ‘General’ market from an MPI Trade Certification perspective, and the system does not cater for any chemistry testing specific to these markets. Although Japan and China do not require an official assurance for wine, we are aware that exporters are routinely asked to provide a certificate of analysis for wine exported to these markets. Exporters arrange any additional testing directly with the laboratory rather than through MPI Trade Certification. This becomes a commercial matter between the exporter and the laboratory to meet importing country requirements. Japan accepts results from laboratories on this list: Laboratories Approved by Japan. An analysis report supplied by those listed wine laboratories will be accepted. ![]() ![]() Great Britain wine OMAR update The Wine Notice: Great Britain Wine OMAR – Amendment 2 (GB wine OMAR) provides an update on MPI’s establishment of Great Britain as a separate market in MPI Trade Certification. This updated OMAR came into effect on 22 November 2024. The GB wine OMAR update introduces a requirement for exporters to make a declaration of eligibility for the Great Britain market in MPI Trade Certification. For more information or queries, please contact MPI Wine Assurance at wine.query@mpi.govt.nz. Organic certificates and 'date of departure' Consignments of organic wine exported to the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, and Northern Ireland must have a Certificate of Inspection (COI) issued by MPI in TRACES (the European Union’s electronic certification system) before the consignment leaves New Zealand. Consignments of organic wine exported to the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland) must have a Great Britain Certificate of Inspection (GB-COI) issued by MPI via MPI Trade Certification before the consignment leaves New Zealand. The date the consignment leaves New Zealand (the date of departure) is the date the ship (or plane) departs from the last New Zealand port (or airport) and does not dock (or land) again at another New Zealand port (or airport). Please work with your freight forwarders to ensure they understand your need to be kept up to date with any changes to the date of departure. This is important to ensure the TRACES-COI or GB-COI can be issued before the ship leaves New Zealand. Consider requesting your TRACES-COI or GB-COI early, at least 3 complete (8 hour) working days prior to the date product is loaded on board, to ensure the consignment has the required documents on time. ![]() ![]() Grape variety list in MPI Trade Certification The list of grape varieties available for selection in MPI Trade Certification has been revised. For example, Rosé is now no longer available to select as a grape variety. If your batch was registered in Wine e-Cert with a grape variety that is not available in MPI Trade Certification, the grape variety field has been migrated as a blank field. You will need to update this in MPI Trade Certification. To add the grape variety to the main wine name, you need to send an email to tradecertification@mpi.govt.nz advising the grape variety that needs to be added to which product ID (P/…). If you do not wish to make a varietal claim, ‘generic white wine’, ‘generic red wine’ or ‘generic rose wine’ can be requested. Wine descriptor varieties that were previously available to select (e.g. rose or blush) can be added as a suffix in the main wine name or via the alternate wine name. Refer to section 5.1 in the MPI Trade Certification user guide – wine businesses. Combined Nomenclature (CN) code format for exports to the European Union When you populate a consignment request for the European Union with the product details, you also need to add the CN code. Please ensure the format used is 220X XX XX as shown in section 13.8 in the MPI Trade Certification user guide – wine businesses. ![]() ![]() Contact Us If there are specific items that you would like us to cover in future editions, please get in touch with us.
