February 2025 No images? Click here Dear Triton Families, As we near the end of winter quarter, your students are juggling a lot — enrolling in spring classes, securing housing for next year, preparing for finals or all of the above. It’s a busy time, and stress levels may be high. While academics and campus life may be top of mind, they likely aren’t the only things weighing on your students. The world beyond their studies — whether on campus, in their communities or beyond — can feel overwhelming, and with a university as large and multifaceted as UC San Diego, what happens outside our campus inevitably impacts our students, our campus and our Triton families. In times of uncertainty and change, building and celebrating community becomes even more important. As parents and supporters, you play an important role in helping your first-generation student find their place within the Triton community. Encouraging them to build connections — whether through shared experiences, peer support or simply taking a break — can make all the difference. Here are a few ways they can find belonging and support:
Every student is different, but no matter how your student prefers to connect, we’re here to ensure they have the support they need — and that you feel supported in supporting them. Sincerely, ![]() Community and belonging are essential to student success. First-Gen Staff Spotlight: Kayana Hudson '22![]() Kayana is a UC San Diego alumna from the class of 2022 who studied sociology and cognitive science. She currently serves as an academic personnel analyst for the Department of Visual Arts at UC San Diego. A top resource I highly recommend for UC San Diego first-generation students and their families is the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program (CASP). As a first-generation student and CASP recipient, this program played a pivotal role in my academic and personal success. CASP not only connected me with a community of first-generation peers who shared similar experiences, but it also provided a strong support system of staff and mentors who guided me throughout my college journey. The program offered a dedicated space to study and relax between classes, and it served as a central hub for first-generation students to access essential academic resources they might not have otherwise known about. I became aware of invaluable campus resources such as the Teaching + Learning Commons, OASIS, and cultural resource centers like the Black Resource Center. Additionally, the program provided opportunities to expand my professional network by connecting me with generous donors who support first-generation students. CASP also offers learning communities designed to familiarize students with campus resources, support academic and professional development, and help prepare for future careers. The program is an incredible resource for first-generation students looking for guidance, community, and academic support throughout their time at UC San Diego. ![]() Scholarship Opportunity: A First-Gen Art GalleryTriton Firsts is hosting an art gallery that reflects the first-generation student experience.
