Remembering Joel Handler (1932-2022)

Study on bail reform reveals how

A new report by UCLA Law's Bail Practicum (led by Alicia Virani, pictured) and UC Berkeley School of Law's Policy Advocacy Clinic finds that the California Supreme Court's 2021 decision in In re Humphrey has neither made cash bail more affordable for those accused of crimes nor decreased pretrial detention. Trailblazing judge Salvador Mendoza Jr. ’97 is appointed to the Ninth Circuit
In September, Salvador Mendoza Jr. ’97 was sworn in as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in Richland, Washington. They met at July's NHL Draft in Montreal (left to right): Vukie Mpofu ’21, manager of hockey operations and legal affairs with the L.A. David Lash ’80, managing counsel for pro bono and public interest at O’Melveny, co-founded the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance, a group of more than 300 law firms working with civil rights and legal aid organizations to combat laws that perpetuate systemic racism. Mary Lipscomb ’20 joined the Los Angeles-based trusts and estates litigation firm Sacks Glazier Franklin & Lodise LLP as an associate. J. Pinder ’76 serves as a member of the ethics committee of the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center. Thomas Stindt ’70 recently retired after 42 years of practice. He has spent much of the past seven years as a specialist volunteer with the Detectives Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. Nathan Walter ’16 founded Briefpoint, a litigation document automation platform, named one of three finalists for Startup of the Year at the 2022 American Legal Technology Awards.
