Final week to submit on a plan to manage
Mount Iron Reserve

A gentle reminder that the draft Mount Iron Reserve Management Plan is open for public submissions until the 29 November😊

We’ve received over 300 submissions so far and are delighted with the high level of community engagement for this much-loved landmark.

If you haven’t already, head to letstalk.qldc.govt.nz to read the draft plan and share your thoughts via an online submission form.

What you can expect to see in the plan:

  • A long-term vision for Mount Iron as a place for natural recreation
  • Objectives such as enabling a safe and resilient reserve, community participation in protecting and enhancing the area, and embedding mana whenua values
  • Policies grouped into eight themes which include commercial activities, community partnering, events, ecology, landscape and geology, development, recreation and natural hazards.

Just to note, the Reserve Management Plan (RMP) includes a map showing the current state of Mount Iron with activities and services that already exist. It doesn’t detail future potential uses and facilities. Any additional activities or facilities supported through the RMP for Mount Iron, such as biking or toilets, would need to have specific plans and potentially consents, which are processes that sit outside this plan.

What's next?
Once public consultation has closed and people have had the opportunity to speak at a public hearing on 10 December, all submissions will be considered by the hearing panel and used to make final changes to the Reserve Management Plan for Mount Iron Recreation Reserve. This plan will then be presented to the Wānaka Upper Clutha Community Board and Full Council for adoption in early 2025.

Wānaka Backyard Trapping news

The Wānaka Backyard Trapping group has caught 102 predators (mostly rats and possums) in the three trap lines on Mount Iron between November 2023 and November 2024.

Thanks to this group for their ongoing predator control efforts to support a thriving biodiversity on Mount Iron.
