Dear Friend:

Thanks so much for your warm acknowledgment and response to my last newsletter in August, and recent video posts on FaceBook.

Yes, we still need to sustain self-isolation at a time when we least want to, after months of unexpected confinement and restriction. Delay, restraint, misunderstandings, introspection, letting go and spiritual surrender go along with this divine period in history. We’re seeing Increasing death and ‘loss’ before our very eyes. So why shall we rely on Ayurveda as the Science of All of Life?

Artwork by Gloria di Simone (left) & Unknown artist (right) may help us understand how to create a personal, living, integrated balance of darkness and light, birth and death, cruelty and forgiveness, decay and creativity.

Ayurveda helps us navigate the middle path of practicality, availability and resourcefulness, with basic principles of daily living in good times and bad, to cultivate a place of all-inclusiveness and unconditional love, where all experiences can nourish unity.

Purpose?
We’re planning to co-create an educational video program with a guidebook and workbook to help support your home self-care program. We feel the discovery of Ayurveda science can help enhance your quality of life and that of others seeking this knowledge and wisdom.

Ayurveda puts emphasis on our routine daily activities, especially the early morning and most especially the thoughts, feelings and emotions of the consciousness invested at that time.  Sankalpa or intention is best developed during the early morning, when subtle spiritual empowerment prevails. If we need a change, shift or adjustment in life, morning intentions are a good time to plan to invest in unity, forgiveness, healing.

BREAKFAST RECIPE: SAVOURY POHA (RICE FLAKES)

So many readers and clients ask about what to eat for breakfast. This recipe is easy, yummy (offers 6 tastes), digestible, light and thrifty. It balances all 3 doshas, is satvic and seasonally adaptable.

This recipe serves 4 and preparation time is about 15 minutes

Ingredients and Method:

3 tbsp. ghee or sunflower oil. Melt in a skillet over medium heat
3 tbsp. freshly grated ginger root, lightly brown
1/2 tsp. cumin seed. Add until popping sound begins
1/2 cup finely chopped organic celery. Add to spice mixture. Stir to coat with oil and spice
or 1-2 small purple potato or grated zucchini or carrots, according to seasonal availability

Optional ingredients:

1 green chilies. minced
Add after ginger root
1/2 tsp. black mustard seeds, If using potatoes, yams, roots
1/4 tsp. ajwain seed. Add to skillet after cumin seeds
1/2 medium or one small onion, finely chopped, add just after spices
1/4 cup chopped, toasted almonds or cashews. Add after poha flakes

Rinse Method for crispiness:

In a colander or sieve, lightly rinse 2 cups of rice flakes (Poha). Light, medium or thick flakes are available in Indian groceries.
The water stream from the tap or jug needs to be narrow, as your fingers lift the flakes to become lightly moist or damp. Too much water can make the flakes soggy (bummer)

Add dry herbs:

1 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. ground coriander

Toss, mix until flakes become crispy and all ingredients are well combined.
Turn heat to low and fold in the rice flakes. Add a little water if necessary. Turn heat off. Cover and let stand for 2 minutes. Place in pretty dish and cover for traveling nearby to share with friends and family

Garnishes:

Dr. Bronner's Mineral Bouillon or similar
unsweetened coconut
chopped cilantro
lime juice (essential)
sesame or hemp seeds, toasted

Note: Poha is ideal for breakfast, lunch, picnic or in place of rice. It’s great for after-school snacks for hungry children. Because this dish offers all six tastes in, it is a crowd-pleaser and great for pot-luck meals.
