At the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79), one year after adoption of Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 at WHA78, Traditional Medicine will be highlighted through special events and meetings as a vital pathway to advance universal health coverage.

With 88% of WHO Member States already using Traditional Medicine – and the Global Strategy calling for its evidence-based, safe and people-centred integration – discussions will focus on youth engagement and strengthening research, regulation and health system integration, particularly through primary healthcare. A series of high-level side events will further highlight its cross-sector impact.

WHO designates Charité in Berlin as a new Collaborating Centre to strengthen evidence and integration of traditional medicine

The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre has designated its first collaborating centre. The Charité Competence Center for Traditional and Integrative Medicine (CCCTIM) at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin has been designated as the WHO Collaborating Centre for Traditional, Integrative and Preventive Medicine for the next four years to strengthen evidence and integration of Traditional Medicine.

Traditional Medicine at World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya

The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre and CCCTIM at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin hosted a plenary session at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting, 29 April 2026, at the United Nations Office, Nairobi. The session, “Traditional Medicine as Part of the Solution: Reimagining Primary Health Care and Universal Health Coverage in Africa”, explored how Traditional Medicine can strengthen primary healthcare and advance universal health coverage, and how multi-stakeholder collaboration can support the implementation of national commitments across the continent.

STAG-TM: Guiding global Traditional Medicine policy

The Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional Medicine (STAG-TM) is a WHO advisory body of independent experts providing strategic, scientific and technical guidance on traditional, complementary and integrative medicine.

It advises on global strategy, informs research priorities, supports standards development and recommends ways to integrate Traditional Medicine into health systems. These efforts support the implementation of the Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034.

Summit summary report showcases key outcomes

The second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, “Restoring balance: The science and practice of health and well-being”, took place on 17–19 December 2025 in New Delhi, India. The Summit advanced the growing global movement to restore balance for people and the planet, grounded in the science and practice of Traditional Medicine. Guided by the Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034, the Summit highlighted the latest evidence and innovations, and addressed critical issues including health systems regulation and integration; respectful information exchange with Indigenous Peoples and across knowledge paradigms; biodiversity preservation and intellectual property rights; and the transformative potential of frontier technologies. This summary report explores key takeaways from the event.

Looking ahead to 2027

The next biennial Global Summit on Traditional Medicine will be held as a hybrid event in late 2027. All WHO Member States are invited to express interest in hosting. An announcement on the Summit location and dates is expected in mid-2026. The Summit will return to India in 2029.
