Courtesy Strathfield Local Studies Happy 50th Birthday Sydney Markets! By the 1950s, Sydney’s fresh produce markets had outgrown their crowded, busy Haymarket site and were in need of a new home. Homebush Saleyards closed in 1967 and construction on the 41-hectare site for new markets commenced in 1972, costing $49 million. The Sydney Markets project became the second largest capital development program ever undertaken by the NSW Government - after Sydney Opera House. Flemington Station, for 80 years the gateway for livestock arriving to market, became the colourful scene of fresh produce transportation. The Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler, officially opened the new markets on 12 September 1975.
