No. 10, August 2019

Back to school is just around the corner!

August and September are exciting months for us as we welcome our newest health professions students to their programs!

Orientation Week is just around the corner and the program leadership and staff have been working hard to make it all happen. Our undergraduate programs will welcome 32 Dental students, 29 in Medical Laboratory Science, 8 to Radiation Therapy, 168 to Medicine and 42 Dental Hygiene students.

This also means that hundreds of clinical preceptors, teachers, clinician educators, program administrators, faculty and health professional colleagues are gearing up with the start of the new academic year. Thank you to everyone who contributes to our incredible institution!

Shirley Schipper, Vice-Dean, Education

Health Professions Education Scholarship Day
The Learning Journey: Student to Scholar

Thursday, December 5, 2019
Royal Glenora Conference Centre

The IDEAS Health Professions Education (HPE) Scholarship Day is a place for FoMD and other U of A health professional educators to locally share their scholarly work and scholarly teaching.  You are welcome to submit an abstract that you've already presented at a national or international conference if many of your FoMD colleagues may not have seen it presented before.  Likewise, we welcome new scholarly work (oral presentations and facilitated poster sessions) or curricular innovations for
which you do not yet have results (Great IDEAS).  We are trying an innovative method to share the stories of our HPE educators with stories from the educational trenches.  The Educators Lounge is a place to share innovative teaching that went really well or experiences where you tried something new and it went terribly wrong.  We want to hear your stores to learn, share, and compare.

Please join us December 5, 2019 to learn and share your scholarly work with your FoMD colleagues.

The conference goals are to:

  • Develop a collaborative network of health professions educators within the FoMD and beyond
  • Create a venue for sharing our HPE scholarship and scholarly teaching locally
  • Increase FoMD faculty, staff, and trainees; productivity and visibility in HPE scholarship

We welcome and encourage collaboration and the sharing of as much of your good work in HPE scholarship and examples of your scholarly teaching as possible; however, to ensure that as many people as possible have the chance to participate, you can only be a session presenter once.  You can be on multiple submissions, but just present once.

All presenters must register for the conference by October 11, 2019.

Abstract submissions open August 1, 2019 and close September 16, 2019.
Conference registration opens August 15, 2019 and closes November 1, 2019.

For more information on how to register or submit an abstract, please visit the conference website at IDEAS HPE Scholarship Day.
