Senior School NoticesTerm 2 Week 3Dear valued member of the PLC community, Students Rock 'n' Roll at High VoltageOn Sunday, our PLC Pipe Band participated in a performance that was a little different to the usual style - taking on the opportunity to rock ’n’ roll through the streets of Fremantle at the much-anticipated High Voltage event! We had a fantastic time and were honoured to play at an event that celebrated the spirit of a largely influential, local legend! We also had three PLC students perform on the Esplanade stage as part of their band, Sour. Well done to Scarlett Whyte (Year 9) – lead guitar and lead singer, Imogen Whyte (Year 7) – lead singer and Scarlett Davies (Year 9) – drummer, on your excellent performance. Congratulations to all students involved. Service Leadership – Young People. Small Steps. Real Changes.Over the past week, Year 9 students were challenged to build bikes as part of a team building workshop. Along with other exercises, this allowed students to build on their communication, teamwork, agreed behaviours and listening skills. At the conclusion of the session, we heard from Foster Care Association WA about the very real statistics of the number of children in care. At the conclusion of the presentation the bikes built by the students were able to be donated to children in care, some of whom arrived at PLC to be surprised by the gift. The bikes were also checked over first by a bike mechanic! Competing in a series of four heats, students worked as a team to come up with the best possible answer to difficult ethical questions. Our Year 10 'eth-letes' were awarded second place, securing their spot in the International Final in July. Months of preparation went into this competition, with two dedicated teams working online with Scotch College each Thursday evening, to refine their understanding of ethical inquiry. da Vinci DecathlonOn Tuesday and Wednesday, PLC competed in the da Vinci Decathlon at UWA. We had some excellent results with:
I wish to give a special thanks to Mr Guy Varndell, Ms Josephine Mfune and Ms Padminee Raja-Snijder, who supported the teams each day. I also wish to thank Ms Lesley Kaye and Ms Ming Till, for their assistance in preparing for this competition. Bond University High School Mooting CompetitionNext week, Year 12 students, Tess Landau, Isla Grant, Jessica Fry and Emrys Loveday, will compete in the Bond University High School Mooting Competition. This is a high-stakes competition that will provide an opportunity for students to build tangible legal skills. Our Year 12 students will battle it out with peers, learn to formulate a bulletproof argument, and receive valuable feedback from real judges, barristers and legal experts with decades of combined industry knowledge. We wish our students the best of luck. Years 11 and 12 Mock TrialsOur Years 11 and 12 Mock Trials teams have their second round of the season in the coming fortnight. With six teams currently in preparation, students will participate in a simulated court case, which contests a fictitious legal matter presented in the Western Australia court system. What a wonderful array of competitive academic opportunities students have been participating in. Well done to all who have represented PLC this week and good luck to those competing in the next few days! Kind regards, Rebecca Watts Chaplain’s ReflectionsAt various points in our lives, no matter how long we have lived, there are moments that are like no other. Whether it is in some form of intellectual pursuit or spiritual encounter, something happens that changes us and sends us in a different direction. Yet between these relatively rare moments of enlightenment, we seem to meander from one life event to another. We know that when we have gone through such an encounter, life takes on a different colour, as we realise that we view life and even ourselves, differently. Important InformationWinter Uniform ReminderWe wish to remind families that after the Mid-Term Break, we will officially return to our Winter Uniform for all Senior School students. Currently, due to the change in weather, students are able to wear either the Summer or Winter Uniform. The Winter Uniform consists of the following items:
Lost PropertyWe have an increasing amount of lost property in the Senior School that includes a number of named and unnamed items. All students have been encouraged to review the lost property, which is located outside the Pastoral and Academic Care Co-ordinators’ Office. Items are divided into year groups and unnamed items are grouped together. We have many unnamed items which appear to be brand new (particularly sports jumpers), so please do encourage your daughter/s to label all their belongings and to check lost property if they have a lost item.
