It also adjusts cholesterol levels, builds proteins and makes bile, which helps you absorb fats, stores sugar for when you really need it and regulates hormone levels. For your liver, that’s all in a day’s work. Your liver health may not be top of mind, but the minute it malfunctioned there wouldn’t be much else on your mind. Cirrhosis, in which liver cells are replaced with scar tissue, can prevent your liver from doing its critical jobs. So can nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a fast-growing epidemic among the obese, which can lead to cirrhosis. “If your liver stopped working,” says Dr. Alqahtani, “toxins would accumulate, you couldn’t digest your food and medications would never leave your body.” In fact — you can’t live a week without your liver. Health Tips: Wash produce and steer clear of toxins. Pesticides and other toxins can damage your liver. Read warning labels on the chemicals you use. Many foods and drinks can help protect the liver, such as oatmeal, green tea, berries, olive oil, and garlic. In contrast, fatty, salty, and sugary foods are harder for the liver to digest. Exercise and eat right. Avoid fatty liver disease by avoiding obesity. Be careful about alcohol consumption. If you think only lifelong, falling-down drunks get cirrhosis of the liver — you’re mistaken. The regular consumption of 2 - 3 standard drinks per day or more can contribute to liver damage Prevent hepatitis A, B and C. Practice safe sex: Hepatitis B and C can develop into chronic conditions that may eventually destroy your liver. They are transmitted by blood and other bodily fluids. Wash your hands: Hepatitis A is spread through contact with contaminated food or water. Some supplement considerations: Milk Thistle Milk thistle contains a group of flavonoids collectively known as silymarin, which have been shown to protect liver cells from toxic substances. Milk thistle is a strong antioxidant that supports healthy liver function by defending against oxidative stress. Choline Choline is an essential nutrient naturally present in meat, fish, poultry, dairy, and eggs. Choline is a major component of phosphatidylcholine (PC), found in lecithin. PC helps prevent accumulation of fat & cholesterol in the liver. Vegetarians and vegans are particularly at risk of a deficiency of choline due to their dietary options. Dandelion Dandelion roots are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the liver against free radical damage and the inflammation that follows. In addition, it supports the production of bile, which aids in the efficient digestion of fats and their expulsion from the body. Artichoke Like milk thistle, artichoke contains silymarin and another similar compound called cynarin. While these antioxidants help promote optimal liver function, other compounds help improve bile flow to flush toxins out of the body. Artichoke leaf extracts are rich in liver-protective flavonoids, while extracts of the stem and root are less so. Beetroot Beetroot is a source of bioactive substances, including betaine and antioxidants, that help prevent fat from accumulating in the liver. It is a natural blood cleanser, purging your body of toxins and heavy metals. Beetroot is rich in glutathiones – a compound found in the phytonutrients betalains – which shines in detoxifying the liver. Also check your Zinc levels and ensure you are getting your daily dose of selenium. Use medications and supplements only as directed. Ingredients in most liver health supplements often help detoxify the body, but even the very best formula will not provide immediate results. This takes time. Research shows that a minimum of 3 months is a good time frame to see some health benefits and help unclog the liver. There are numerous benefits associated with a successful lifestyle-induced liver detoxification, including the following signs liver detox may be working: More energy Mood improvements Improved digestion and gut health Better sleep Improved cognition Easier weight management Less bloating Healthier skin Before trying liver detoxification, individuals should consult with a healthcare provider for personalised advice.
