It’s an opportunity for individuals and communities to learn about the critical role biodiversity plays in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human well-being. Throughout the month, you can learn about and support Logan's biodiversity through these various citizen science projects. Great Glossy Count 📅 7 - 8 September This citizen science event collects data to help understand glossy black-cockatoo populations. Spend one hour (or more) during the count exploring your selected survey site, and record your sightings of the species and its feeding habitat. Great Southern Bioblitz 📅 20 - 23 September This global four-day bioblitz sees regions across the Southern Hemisphere come together to discover and record as many local plant and animals as possible. Upload your sightings to the iNaturalist project. Logan Koala Count 📅 27 September - 6 October This citizen science event helps to create a snapshot of koalas across our city. Capture sightings, scats and audio recordings of koalas, and upload your sightings to the iNaturalist project. FEATURED NEWSBecome a Nature Explorer in LoganTake a family adventure during the school holidays and get outdoors with the 2024 Nature Explorer Challenge. Download the Agents of Discovery app and head to Alexander Clark Park to play, learn and explore. From 14 - 29 September, there are challenges across the park for kids to complete and help grow their nature knowledge. Get some koala-ty time outdoorsHave you been utilising your koala-friendly tips from last month and are ready to learn more? We've got you covered with events for all ages. Learn tips to help you spot these marsupial neighbours on the Koala Discovery Walk. Or bring the kids and their favourite teddy bear along on the fun-filled Koala 'Bears' Picnic. Calling all community environmental groupsThe 2024 Landcare Australia Community Grants are now open with funding up to $20,000 available for projects. If you're delivering a project that addresses priority issues for your group, community and/or the environment, apply before Friday 20 September. ECO LOGAN EVENTSCouncil's environmental events program now has a new name....ECO Logan! Nest Box Neighbours - 7 SeptemberGet ready for a hands-on session where you'll get the opportunity to learn how to build, install, monitor and maintain nest boxes for hollow-dependent wildlife. Each group will be provided with materials and guided through the assembly of a nest box to install in your garden. Bookings required. Creek Explorers - 21 SeptemberLearn about the different creatures that call Logan's waterways home for World Rivers Day. Kids will get the opportunity to forage for waterbugs, go on a treasure hunt to search for different waterway wildlife and make a special waterway animal to take home. Bookings required. Bushland Discovery Walk - 22 SeptemberJoin us on a springtime walk that combines exploring nature with the discoveries of citizen science. Guides will lead you along bushland trails, sharing their knowledge about the diverse ecosystems and wildlife that thrive in this area. You'll get to contribute your sightings to the Great Southern Bioblitz. Bookings required. Plant Propagation Workshop - 5 OctoberGet ready for a hands-on workshop where you'll get the opportunity to learn the skills to grow your own native plants and help boost your backyard biodiversity. Experts from Cedar Grove Landcare will guide you through the basics of propagating plants and how to care for them as they grow. Bookings required. Each month we will share a new word that you can learn. For a full list of words download the Yugambeh dictionary. Cockatoo (Black) = Baleirei ONE SMALL CHANGE, ONE BIG IMPACT For the last 7 years, bakers across Australia have been raising awareness of threatened native plants and animals through the Threatened Species Bake Off. The 2024 national competition is calling for edible creations that focus on the threatened Baked creations can be entered into one of six categories between Sunday 1 - Sunday 15 September. Showcase your entry (and enjoy some cake) by holding an event around Threatened Species Day at your workplace, or with family or friends. The Bake Off is a fun way for you to learn more about Australia’s threatened species, celebrate raising awareness and maybe win bragging rights. FREE TREES Property owners in Logan can take advantage of our Free Trees program. Bring a copy of your current rates notice to one of the collection locations and choose from a wide range of plants.
