Frankton Track Wastewater Pipeline Upgrade Newsletter #3 | February 2026 The latest information on work to deliver a new wastewater pipeline between Queenstown and Frankton that will contribute to a larger, more effective wastewater system - increasing capacity in the network, boosting its resilience, reducing the risk of overflows, and helping to provide for the future needs of the area’s rapidly growing population. Progress update

Photo credit: McConnell Dowell Work’s well and truly underway down on Frankton Track and while it might be early in the project, crews already have 150 metres of trench excavated despite significant rock in the area, and 100 metres of the new wastewater pipe in the ground too. With lots of pipes pre-welded and an important culvert diversion in place to keep stormwater away from the work site, we’re looking forward to watching how quickly the metres of trenching and pipe installed grow over the coming months. A friendly reminder to please stay out of the construction site. Any unauthorised access to the site is dangerous and will cause delays to this work. If anyone is found within the site, the contractor has a strict shutdown policy to ensure the health and safety of their staff and the public. Frankton Track closure in place
As we’ve previously shared, Frankton Track is now closed to the public from opposite Middleton Road near Frankton Marina through to the end of Park Street in Queenstown. Pedestrians and cyclists are being detoured along Frankton Road/SH6A during this time. Safety improvements for the detour
A big thank you to everyone who has used the detour and shared their feedback on the experience to date. We’ve made a few safety improvements along the route and have more planned over the next few weeks. What we’ve done: 🌳 Vegetation has been cleared on both sides of the road to provide as much space as possible for footpath and cycle lane users. 🗑️ Rubbish bins and their placement on the footpath are being checked before and after collection to ensure they’re safely out of the way. 🪧 New, clearer signage has been installed at both ends of the detour to improve wayfinding for pedestrians and cyclists. ➡️ The separation line for pedestrians and cyclists has been reapplied on sections of the footpath along Frankton Road. What we’re doing next: 💧 Dirt and debris on the footpath’s surface will be cleaned. 🚲 New pedestrian and bicycle symbols will be applied at specific points along the footpath. 🚩 Flexi posts will be installed on the footpath near the Marina to improve safety for cyclists heading onto the detour from the track . ➡️ We’re looking into potentially using some of the slip lanes along Frankton Road for cyclists, helping to avoid some of the more narrow parts of the detour. 🖌️ We’re reviewing adding line marking on parts of Frankton Road to help identify where cyclists can travel. We’d like to thank those driving or living along Frankton Road for being mindful of the extra foot and bike traffic in the area, and ask that you please continue to do so. Residents are asked to continue placing their bins out for collection on Frankton Road in an orderly line to provide footpath users with enough space to safely move around them. Please continue to follow all detour signage instructions, and dismount from your bike when instructed to. Work on Stage 2 starts in March
We’re expecting work on Stage 2 that runs from the Frankton Beach pump station through to Frankton Marina to get underway in mid-March. As a reminder, minor detours will be required as part of these works, which will include shifting pedestrians and cyclists closer to the lakefront, especially around Shoreline Road. The carpark at Frankton Marina will remain open when crews are working in the area, but some traffic management will be required at times to direct vehicles safely around trenches. Your input is important
