Face Masks on Campus Effective August 1, 2020, wearing a mask is mandatory in all indoor common areas and everywhere 2 metre distancing is not possible, on all University of Alberta properties. This is in alignment with advice from public health authorities as well as with the City of Edmonton’s recent approval of a mandatory mask bylaw for indoor public spaces.
Welcome to Janis Cole Welcome to Janis Cole, who has joined the research program as Clinical Research Coordinator for BedMed PTC. Janis has worked on campus as a senior research coordinator for the past eight years in the Department of Human Nutrition working on human clinical trials relating to gut bacteria, inflammation and fibre. She completed her Bachelor of Science in nutrition at the U of A and loves being on campus! When she is not at work you can find her enjoying the outdoors biking, gardening, camping, skiing, skating, it is definitely one of her favorite places to be!
Welcome to Nathan Archibald Welcome to Nathan Archibald, who has joined the research program as a Research Assistant for the BedMed Initiative, a study examining the health outcomes of taking blood pressure medication at different times of day. Nathan is a recent graduate from the Physiology Honors program at the University of Alberta. Motivated by a passion to answer meaningful research questions, he is dedicated to optimizing the healthcare field. Nathan is a soon-to-be father who enjoys spending time with family and being in the outdoors.
Research Strategic Plan -Implementation Update Engage. Discover. Change. What is the purpose of family medicine research? As we implement the Research Strategic Plan, recent discussions have progressed from what we do (our mission), to why (our purpose) and how our work will impact the discipline of family medicine (our vision). Thoughtful reflection has been given to strengthening the connections between the work of the Research Program and the actions necessary to advance family medicine research
to ensure long-term success
Heracleous (2000) argues, “sustained strategic success can only be realized from continuous innovation and continuous adaptability.” Strategic success is largely contingent on working together to realize our objectives and facilitate alignment of actions to achieve our goals. The Research Strategic Plan acts as a compass, guiding future actions necessary to promote, support, create, and disseminate research, knowledge, and scholarship. Recent implementation accomplishments and highlights include: - The Research Program hosted a virtual PCMH Research Town Hall Meeting to
seek feedback to better understand PCMH research involvement and what the Research Program can do in the future to address PCMH research needs.
- The Research Program conducted a Start, Stop, and Continue Questionnaire to inform the Work Smarter Working Group as they establish priorities to address the strategic objectives.
- Each of the five (5) Working Groups have started to identify actions and timelines for short- and long-term goals.
- Goals and actions created by the Working Groups serve to ensure full representation of our diverse and inclusive culture of family medicine research.
- Planning is underway to increase engagement and optimize the
research skills and knowledge necessary for family medicine residents, faculty, and staff.
Whether our work in family medicine research involves managing daily schedules, overseeing budgets, hiring new staff, conducting a randomized controlled trial, publishing a scholarly article, diagnosing a sick patient, mentoring a resident, analyzing data, writing a report, or communicating results; we all contribute to continuously improving the service, safety, and quality of patient care. In 2012 the Northern Alberta Academic Family Medicine Fund, an endowment held by the University of Alberta and managed by employees of the Department of Family Medicine, was established. The interest generated from this endowment is intended to support initiatives promoting the advancement of family medicine.
A fund management committee was established to review Requests for Proposals from Family Medicine staff, residents, students and trainees. Now on our fourteenth RFP, we are very pleased with the response to this initiative. To date, the committee has funded almost 100 proposals.
