Welcome to the March issue of College Connections.

The annual conference is a few short weeks away. You can read more about what is planned at the conference below. Early bird and hotel group rate pricing for the conference are still in effect until March 14.

Important Notices:

  • Register for the Annual General MeetingThe AGM is an online only meeting on Zoom to be held May 14 at noon. Attendance is eligible for CPD hours.
  • Annual General Meeting Resolutions may be submitted electronically to the College at registrar_office@cab-bc.org. Resolutions must be received by 4pm on April 1, 2025 to be deemed eligible.
  • Voting for 2025-2026 Board nominees opens on April 2.

The College's 2025 Conference will be held on April 10-11, 2025 at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre in Prince George, BC on the Traditional Territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation. The College is Seeking Subject Matter Experts

The College is looking to contract 3 subject matter experts (SMEs) to assist in the complaints and investigation process.

We are seeking 1 SME from each of the following 3 areas:

  1. Riparian Area Protection Regulation assessments and reporting
  2. Wetland Classification
  3. Environmental assessments – focused on municipal development processes.

The contracts would include reviewing complaint files, analyzing methodology, and providing a summary report.

We ask that interested registrants review the qualifications in the position profile and submit a resume and cover letter to cab@cab-bc.org. if you meet the qualifications.

Please submit your resume and cover letter by March 28, 2025.

Qualified applicants that are not selected will be added to the College’s existing SME roster to be considered for future opportunities. The College plans to update the existing roster later this year.

The Government of Canada invests over $12.2 million in 22 projects to support environmental restoration and wildlife conservation across Canada
From the Government of Canada - On February 10, 2025, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced that over $12.2 million from the Environmental Damages Fund will be used to benefit 22 projects that will focus on restoring or improving the natural environment, improving environmental quality, and research and development leading to restoration.

Consultation on Amending the List of Species under the Species at Risk Act: Aquatic Species January 2025
From the Government of Canada - The Government of Canada is committed to conserving Canada’s biodiversity and preventing the disappearance of wildlife species at risk from our lands and waters. As part of its strategy for realizing that commitment, on June 5, 2003, the Government of Canada proclaimed the Species at Risk Act (SARA). Attached to the Act is the List of Wildlife Species at Risk (Schedule 1, the List).

Government of Canada investing more than $3.7 million in projects across the country to help fight aquatic invasive species
From the Government of Canada - Today, during Invasive Species Awareness Week, the Honourable Élisabeth Brière, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced more than $3.7 million in contribution funding for seven multi-year projects to combat aquatic invasive species across the country.

Annual burbot recovery resumes in Lower Kootenay
From the Government of BC - Collaborative teams from the Province, the Ktunaxa Nation Council, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, and Idaho Department of Fish and Game are working on Moyie Lake to help recovery of the Lower Kootenay burbot population.

New legislation will accelerate B.C. renewable energy projects
From the Government of BC - To ensure rapid permitting and robust regulation of renewable energy projects, the Province will introduce legislation in spring 2025 allowing the regulation of renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar, to move under the authority of the BC Energy Regulator (BCER). 

Funding supports culturally safe emergency responses for Indigenous People
From the Government of BC - To ensure inclusivity and respect for Indigenous Peoples during emergencies, First Nations communities and local governments throughout B.C. will receive funding to strengthen cultural safety in local emergency-management practices.

Targeted actions prevent spread of chronic wasting disease in urban deer
From the Government of BC - The Province, with the support of the City of Cranbrook, the City of Kimberley and ʔaq’am, is taking action to curb the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) by targeted removal and testing of urban deer.

Legislation helps expand parks, recognize Indigenous history
From the Government of BC - Legislation has been introduced to expand three existing provincial parks and rename two parks to recognize Indigenous connections.

More than 70 projects will strengthen wildfire prevention, support forestry
From the Government of BC - Workers and communities throughout B.C. are benefiting from Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) supported projects that reduce wildfire risk and increase fibre supply, keeping local mills and energy plants running in the face of U.S. tariff threats and unjustified softwood lumber duties.

The Haida Nation and Canada announce a first-of-its-kind agreement recognizing Aboriginal title on Haida Gwaii
From the Prime Minister of Canada - Today, the President of the Haida Nation, Gaagwiis Jason Alsop, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, Gary Anandasangaree, announced the signing of the Chiix̲uujin / Chaaw K̲aawgaa “Big Tide (Low Water)” Haida Title Lands Agreement.

New federal scholarship launches to support the next generation of Canadian meteorologists
From the Government of Canada - Across the country, meteorologists provide essential weather information that helps Canadians make informed decisions about their health, safety, and economic prosperity. With Canadians experiencing more frequent and severe weather events, timely and accurate weather information is critically important.

The Government of Canada invests in Indigenous communities’ marine response capacity as part of the Oceans Protection Plan
From the Government of Canada - When marine incidents happen in remote coastal areas, members of Indigenous communities are often the first to respond, as instrumental partners in Canada’s search and rescue system. As part of the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada is committed to enhancing on-water safety and community-based marine response by supporting Indigenous communities’ active participation in Canada’s marine safety response system.

The Government of Canada is reducing emissions at British Columbia ports
From the Government of Canada - Building a clean transportation system and a green economy is more important now than ever before. The Government of Canada is therefore actively working to achieve decarbonization of the marine sector by advancing green shipping initiatives along British Columbia’s coastline.

Green Shipping Corridor Program – Funding for projects in British Columbia
From the Government of Canada - Three projects based in British Columbia are funded under the Green Shipping Corridor Program’s Clean Ports stream. Overall, these projects focus on shore power solutions.
