Kingston Three Waters Upgrades

Newsletter #2 | October 2024

Read on for the latest information on work starting next week to install new water supply pipes on Kent Street in Kingston.

Water supply upgrades begin

Starting on Monday 7 October, crews will begin installation of a new bulk water supply main (water pipes) along the south side of Kent Street in Kingston. This work will start at the intersection of Kent and Oxford Street and move east towards State Highway 6 (SH6), as crews try to complete as much of this work as possible before Christmas this year.

Some changes to road layouts and access around Kingston will be required from Monday 7 October, starting with:

  • Sections of Kent Street will be reduced to one lane under a priority give way system as work progresses from the intersection with Oxford Street towards SH6.
  • Access to the southern section of Oxford Street will be temporarily restricted to residents only using a single lane under a priority give way system from Kent Street.
  • Access into the northern section of Oxford Street will be maintained, but traffic exiting the area will need to use Cornwall Street and Cambridge Street to exit the area and get onto Kent Street.
  • Changes to access on Oxford Street are expected to remain in place for approximately five weeks.

Crews carrying out these works will ensure resident and pedestrian access is maintained, and any changes or potential disruptions will be widely communicated in advance to the Kingston community.

What's actually happening on Kent Street?

In order to install the new bulk water supply main along Kent Street, work includes:

  • Pipe welding located on the berm areas of empty sections between 58 and 64 Kent Street.
  • Excavation and trenching works to be completed in stages and at approximately 100 metres at a time, to install new water pipes and associated fittings.
  • Trenches will be backfilled, and berms, road shoulders, and road crossings will be reinstated as works progress along Kent Street.

What happens next?

As we make progress down Kent Street towards SH6, the work site will shift and require temporary changes to other roads in Kingston.

  • Road closures will be required on Glendinning Crescent and then Stradbroke Way at their intersections with Kent Street. We’ll confirm dates well ahead of time.
  • As these works get closer to SH6, crews will monitor traffic to minimise as much delay as possible and to avoid any queuing of vehicles on SH6.

Maps of future work sites and how they will affect roads in Kingston will be shared soon.

Future work packages and expected dates

Work package two

This includes the extension of the new bulk supply water main from Kent Street to the Kingston Village subdivision, and construction of a large-diameter stormwater pipe along the length of Oxford Street.

Work is underway to determine the contractor that will deliver these works. We expect to be able to announce who this is by the end of October.

We’re expecting work on these improvements to start towards the end of 2024, and they’ll take approximately 12 months to complete.

Work package three

This includes construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and the associated discharge infrastructure/land treatment area on Kingston Station, and a pump station on the corner of Oxford and Dorset Street.

These upgrades are currently in the detailed design phase, and we’ll share more information on them in a future update.

We’re expecting work on these improvements to begin in the first half of 2025, and they’ll take approximately 18 months to complete.
