Welcome to the September edition of Organic News Kia ora koutou, Regulations The Organic Standards Regulations 2025 and Organic Products and Production Regulations 2025 are now publicly available: The Organic Standards Regulations set out the minimum requirements that must be met for primary products to be labelled as ‘organic’. The standard is technical in nature and will require supplementary notices to give it full effect. It is divided into seven sections: general, livestock, plants, aquaculture, apiary, processing and handling, and inputs. The Products and Production Regulations set out the checks and balances necessary to ensure the standard is followed. Tools for ensuring organic integrity include diligent record keeping and regular communication and checks, including regular onsite visits from an independent verification body. Development of these regulations has been a significant undertaking and promulgation is a considerable milestone. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this process. Focus now turns to readying the supplementary notices for public consultation. Supplementary Notices The following supplementary notices are in development:
Public consultation on the supplementary notices is planned to begin in late September and will start with the Inputs Notice for generic substances. Cost Recovery Public consultation on the cost recovery proposals under the Organic Products and Production Act 2023 has closed. 53 submissions were received. The team are working on reviewing the submissions and will produce a summary of submissions and recommendations. Implementation With the promulgation of the regulations, we are turning our attention to operationalising the new regime.
