Happy Data Summit week! The past two days have been a whirlwind of insight, inspiration and recognition for the 200 delegates who attended the 2024 DBE Data Summit, as well as more than 500 colleagues who joined the livestream. From the hard-hitting opening address of Director General HM Mweli, and the break-away sessions that tackled hot topics and challenges facing the education sector, to the surprise “avatar” who made an appearance at the awards evening, the Summit was an information and technology feast.

As one district director put it, “We’ve never had a Data Summit as powerful as this one!” For those who weren’t able to join, fear not! This edition of DataPoint e-newsletter captures some of the highlights, and we’ll be sharing more in the weeks to come. Thanks to everyone who joined us for this special dose of data magic!

Founding Executive Director of DataDrive2030, Sonja Giese, gave delegates an in-depth view of the importance of the data value chain in maximising reach and impact of education initiatives. The presentation emphasised the point that what we measure, and why we measure it, really matters.   Day 1 of the Data Summit kicked off with a data-rich opening address from DBE Director General HM Mweli, covering critical context from strategic direction and priorities to current challenges and most importantly, the progress that the sector has made towards establishing a quality-assured data management system.   Regional Director of Education International, Dr Dennis Sinyolo, shared his views on global and regional education commitments and current data sources; examples of how data is being used to inform advocacy and policy; and an innovative “medical model” of education system diagnosis.

Challenging the sector, and challenging ourselves
Delegates were put to work in four break-away sessions to tackle the following subjects: Data collection, management and use; inter-departmental and public/private collaboration; improving data quality and credibility; and predictive analytics and its role in forecasting educational outcomes. See the recommendations from each session via the link below.   Wednesday evening was a night of glitz, glamour and recognition for an outstanding group of national and provincial data winners! Guests were treated to a live performance from the East Rand School of the Arts, as well as a real-time “avatar” co-host alongside Master of Ceremonies Bunny Majaja. Click below for details of the winners and awards criteria.   Day 2 started with a strong message of encouragement from Chief Director of Information and Management Systems, Mr Bheki Mpanza, followed by insights from US-based Ed-Fi Alliance’s Eric Jansson, livestreaming from Austin, Texas. The session ended with keynote speaker Nicky Verd, who challenged delegates to disrupt themselves, or “be disrupted”.
