Over 660,000 people signed up to Drop, Cover and Hold with us in October. Our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi took place on Thursday 28 October at 9:30am. NEMA, Otago Emergency Management, EQC and some members of Massey University joined the students of St Joseph's School in Ōamaru to practice Drop, Cover and Hold as well as their tsunami hikōi. ShakeOut is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake — Drop, Cover and Hold — and to practice a tsunami hīkoi (evacuation) if in a coastal area. Thank you to all who joined us for ShakeOut 2021 and practiced their tsunami hīkoi, we are looking forward to seeing you all back for another drill in 2022. 2021 Disaster Preparedness Survey ResultsThe National Emergency Management Agency has released the results of the 2021 Disaster Preparedness Survey. This annual survey of 1001 people across Aotearoa assesses disaster preparedness and the effectiveness of our public education programme. NEMA worked with Colmar Brunton to make improvements to the survey while ensuring data could still be compared with previous years. Feedback from Massey University and EQC was incorporated and best practice advice from Statistics New Zealand has made the collection of gender data more inclusive. Additional questions about emergency plans, disabilities and Emergency Mobile Alert were also added. Among the highlights are a record high 91% knowing the right activity to take in a long or strong earthquake near the coast, nine in ten people receiving an emergency mobile alert or being near someone who did, and new insights into the use of household emergency plans. NZ EMAT CampAll three New Zealand Emergency Management Assistance Team (NZ EMAT) cohorts came together earlier this month for an opportunity to develop as professional emergency managers and build overall group capability at the inaugural NZ EMAT Camp. Hosted by NEMA and supported by Fire and Emergency New Zealand EMAT operational support & logistics personnel, the NZ EMAT Camp provided targeted professional development and a training environment for the use of deployment kits, Deployable Coordination Centre caches, and operational systems. The programme for Camp featured speakers and workshops from a range of key agencies and partners, including Response and Recovery Aotearoa New Zealand (RRANZ), Fire and Emergency New Zealand, New Zealand Red Cross and West Coast Civil Defence Emergency Management Group. Other activities included an Alpine Fault scenario tabletop exercise and a full build of a Deployable Coordination Centre.
