What's on at SSE October 2022

Sustainable Development for the Betterment of the World.

Dear SSE Community,

As we move closer to the end of another year, we continue to confront ongoing global challenges with periods of extreme weather, economic and social deprivations, and volatile geopolitical brinkmanship. Amidst these trials, we also see exceptional acts of human compassion, fortitude, and innovation. Within this context, the SSE team has been reflecting on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and how we can continue to align our values, strategy and mission with these goals. The seventeen UNSDGs articulate ways in which we can tackle some of our world’s most wicked problems including poverty, inequality, climate change, peace, and justice, and serve as a guide, encouraging us to work more entrepreneurially and collaboratively to achieve a better and more sustainable future.

Several of the UNSDGs align with SSE’s purpose and strategic vision for 2022-2025, including Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, which articulates sustained and inclusive economic growth by providing job opportunities for everyone, with a focus on women and young people.

At the core of our purpose, SSE partners with industry, education, community and government across our broad ecosystem to build Australia’s knowledge economy and remove barriers to employment for more people by delivering work-relevant, skills capability training and learning pathways. In striving to contribute to meeting these important United Nations Goals, we work to deliver impact to people seeking to improve their lives and nurture their livelihoods. In this month’s Newsletter, you will read just a few stories of some of our recent work with young people across the state of NSW. We have been excited and inspired by the students’ enthusiasm, critical problem-solving, EQ, and, increasingly, AQ (Adaptability Quotient).

Read on to learn about some of the inspiring educational engagements and innovations occurring across our communities, and their impact locally and globally.

Sincerely,
Sarah

Exciting Growth for the SSE Team

The SSE team is continuing to grow, and this month we’re excited to welcome to the team Nicole Swanson as Director, Marketing, Brand and Communications, and Caine Wilkins as Engagement and Outreach Officer .

The growth of our Marketing and Business Development teams is vital to our important continued work and partnerships and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Nicole and Caine. Learn more about Nicole and Caine on our website.

We welcomed Client Services and Administration Officer, Isabel to the team a few months ago. Isabel is a whiz at all things operational and is continuously improving SSE’s activities and customer engagement.

We recently caught up with her to find out her best piece of advice, what she thinks are the most needed skills and capabilities, and how she unwinds after a long day. Learn more in Fast Five with Isabel Urrego.

Rethinking Your Financial Future

Last month our team was on the ground in regional NSW in Tamworth delivering the Rethinking Your Financial Future (RYFF) program to a group of 40 school students from four schools across the region including Tamworth High School, McCarthy Catholic College, Oxley High School and Barraba Central School.

Participants spent two days enhancing their financial independence and broadening their skills to better understand future employment opportunities, including self-employment and remote work.

Linked closely to UNSDGs 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), these programs are important in building the capabilities of young women to ensure they have the tools for future success.

In last month's newsletter we introduced our new Ignite Program and earlier this month we delivered the 2-day workshop introducing secondary school students to the world of innovation and entrepreneurship.

38 students from 2 schools attended the program in regional Dubbo NSW

A dark blue banner with white and blue writing. Text across the banner reads "Know a small or medium business who'll benefit from free cyber security?" Below this it reads Cyber123 for SME, the essential free guide for SMEs to take control of their cybersecurity. There is a website, the SSE logo, and an image of a paper origami bird.

A lot to look forward to!

Looking forward, November is a busy month for SSE with 5 programs taking place across the month. It is also NSW Small Business Month, and we are excited to be supporting the initiative to celebrate and empower small businesses.
