COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING NEWSLETTERA Note from Interim Dean Jenny Loertscher
As we close winter quarter and look ahead to spring, I want to thank our students, faculty, staff, alumni, partners and friends for your continued support of the College of Science and Engineering. Your engagement helps sustain the opportunities we offer students and strengthens our impact beyond campus. In this issue, you’ll read about a transformative grant from the Henry Luce Foundation supporting women in STEM, a faculty spotlight on Eric Gilbertson’s research on Mount Rainier, and an alumni story featuring Gabe Veltri, ‘24, and Olivia Roberts, ‘24, whose class project grew into a published study—just one example of the power of undergraduate research at CSE. We also invite you to stay connected in the weeks ahead by participating in SU Gives on April 16, Seattle University’s annual 24-hour giving day, or joining us at Projects Day, where our graduating seniors in engineering, environmental science and computer science, along with master’s students in data science and computer science/software engineering, will showcase their capstone work. Thank you for being part of the CSE community and for the many ways you help advance our mission. Grant Propels Women in STEMThe Henry Luce Foundation, through its Clare Boothe Luce Program for Women in STEM has awarded the Seattle University College of Science and Engineering $700,000 for professorships that support the development of highly impactful, career-relevant experiential learning courses across the college. Peak PerformanceEngineering Professor Eric Gilbertson measured Mt. Rainier and found global warming had shrunk Washington state’s iconic peak but that’s just one of his discoveries. From Classroom Project to Published StudyGabe Veltri, ‘24, and Olivia Roberts, ‘24, collaborated on a two-week research project in a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) on invertebrate zoology and biodiversity science taught by Professor of Biology Dr. Kristin Hultgren. They are now co-authors on a paper in a scientific journal.
