The Principal, Council and St Andrew’s College community honour the life of Neville Whan, who passed away on Saturday 12 July 2025, aged 80.
Neville was born in 1944 and grew up in Glenn Innes. He attended College from 1963 until 1967, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Neville studied Medicine while at St Andrew's. He was widely admired at College for his love of contemporary music and the fine arts and his impeccable style, having been named one of the 'Ten Best Dressed Collegemen of 1965' by the Pukka Sub-Committee. Neville was an enthusiastic member of the Drama Society and regularly performed in College productions, later becoming President of the DramSoc Committee in 1966 and 1967.
Following the 1965 Annual General Meeting, a commission was established to examine the “features and institutions” of the College, and Neville Whan — alongside fellow students — was appointed to that commission. Neville was involved in the re-examining of the 'Fresher System' to create an environment of inclusion for the first-year students.
Neville married his wife, Lynne, at the College Chapel on 10 February 1968. Together, they have three children.
After completing his studies, Neville spent two years working at a hospital in Nova Scotia, Canada, where two of his children were born. The family later moved to London and then to Oxford, where Neville pursued his specialty training in psychiatry.
Neville went on to become a dedicated child psychiatrist. Returning to Sydney in 1976, he worked for several years at a juvenile mental health unit attached to Westmead Hospital before going into private practice in Westmead. Throughout his career, Neville was deeply committed to the wellbeing of young people and their families, earning the respect and gratitude of colleagues and patients alike.
We hold the Whan family warmly in our hearts and extend our sincere sympathy to all who shared in Neville’s life.
