Neuro-Oncology Nurse Practitioner

Get to know our Neuro-Oncology Nurse Practitioner, Vivien Biggs, with an insight into her role, how the role has evolved and how Vivien best assists the needs of our patients and families.

How do you think the role has evolved since being established? The role was originally established in 2007 titled Brain Tumour Coordinator. The main focus of the role was to provide education and support for brain tumour patients and their families and to help coordinate their care. In 2010 after completing my Masters the role became Neuro-oncology Nurse Practitioner, in addition to coordinator role as an NP I can carry out patient assessment, order diagnostics, prescribe medications and refer patients to other specialists. This evolution of the role has meant that I can in collaboration with the Neurosurgeons and Oncologists help manage patients symptoms and care throughout their treatment.  These extra skills assist in providing an efficient and comprehensive service for our patients and is the point of contact for the patient and family.
