A message from Dr Neil Ralph, Deputy Director of Technology Enhanced Learning

Welcome to the October issue of TEL News.

This month the Virtual and Hybrid Learning Faculty (VHLF) Modernisation Monday Series launched, you can read more on this below. I wanted to take the opportunity to say a huge well done to those getting it out the door. The VHLF has now been going strong for four years and we are proud of the thriving community of practice that has grown from it. Thank you for your contributions

There's just under a month left until the Four Nation AI in Healthcare Conference. If you're able to, do register for a place, AI is a fast growing entity and is becoming an ever more important as a tool for us all.

Lastly, SCRIPT has reached a momentous 15-year milestone. Created in partnership with the University of Birmingham and OCB Media LTD, SCRIPT elearning service exists to encourage safe and effective prescribing and medicines management and has been used nationally by prescribers throughout its time. The programme has shown continuous growth, with the latest data revealing 51,000 users and almost 160,000 module completions in the last 12 months. We celebrate this significant moment in the history of the programme and thank our partners for their work to collaborate and deliver such a powerful impact on the health and care system.

Simulation and Immersive Technologies

Virtual reality resources for Allied Health Professionals 

To coincide with Allied Health Professional (AHP) day on 14 October, the Simulation and Immersive Technologies team have refreshed the AHP - Virtual Reality Insight Videos catalogue on Learning Hub. 

As the third-largest clinical workforce in health and care, AHPs are crucial in supporting and delivering care. These virtual reality videos provide an insight into what a typical day looks like for some of the 14 allied health professions. These include: 

• Podiatry 
• Orthoptics 
• Prosthetics and orthotics 
• Therapeutic radiography 
• Dietetics 
• Speech and Language Therapy 
• And the newly added Operation Department Practitioner 360-degree video learning resource.

Simulation and Immersive Technology Communities 

Did you know, the Simulation and Immersive Technologies team host several communities to support the delivery of immersive education in health and care? You can attend live community meetings every month, or view recordings of previous meetings and presentations on the Learning Hub.

 

Extended Reality in Education (XRE) 

Formerly Virtual Reality in Education (VRE), the XRE community enables members to share, discuss and stay informed around best practice for using immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality in education. 

The next monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday 18 November 2025 at 09:00 where XR healthcare pioneers Sarah Ticho and Ross O’Brien will share their latest findings from a study of the XR landscape undertaken with the University of Liverpool.

Digital Innovation in Health and Care Education (DIHCE) 

DIHCE is the community of practice for people working in education and training in health and care, wanting to explore the latest education technologies and innovations. The purpose is to inspire and encourage innovation with health and care education, as well as providing practical information to those looking to introduce technology into their education provision. 

The next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday 20 November 2025 at 10:00 featuring a project developed by surgeons that uses the latest technology to support Orthopaedic Surgery.  Complete the online form to join. 

 

Supporting TEL

Are you a member of the TEL Network? The network has been developed to enable TEL professionals from the NHS, higher education and social care to connect with each other, ask questions, collaborate on TEL projects and share successes. As a network member, you will receive invitations to our events, such as quarterly TEL Forums, CPD sessions and Tea and TEL. Join the TEL Network.

 

Presentation Skills Workshop for TEL Network - Recording available 

The session covered practical tips and insights from an experienced speaker on effective presentation techniques, including overcoming nerves, structuring content, and engaging an audience. Read more or listen to the recording online.

 

Four Nations Responsible AI in Healthcare Education Conference

Date: Wednesday, 12 November 2025
Time: 10am to 16.00pm

There is still time to register for the free virtual conference exploring the responsible use of artificial intelligence in healthcare education. This free event will bring together voices from across the UK to share insights, challenges, and opportunities in AI-enhanced learning. 

Conference themes include: 

  • Enhancing educator teaching capabilities 
  • Curriculum and assessment transformation 
  • Continuous professional development for educators 
  • Responsible AI for quality learning 
  • Practical risks, challenges, and ethics 

The event is open to all healthcare educators, trainers, and education leaders across the UK.

NEW: VHLF Modernisation Monday Series (MMS)

The Virtual and Hybrid Learning Faculty (VHLF) Programme is driving innovation across the NHS, helping our Community of Practice (COP) members embrace new technologies and evolve their practices. This commitment is reflected in a new initiative VHLF MMS which has been designed to empower educators across the healthcare system one conversation at a time. 

Featuring a weekly memo released every Monday and a monthly community event hosted on the 1st Monday of the month at 14:00-15:30. The series contains peer-led share and learn opportunities for educators to modernise virtual and hybrid learning.  Read the latest memo here.

Competency Frameworks on Digital Learning Solutions (DLS)

Following feedback from framework owners and platform users, TEL have revised the support offering available to those using the competency frameworks service on DLS. The updated support model is aligned for both new and existing frameworks, to ensure that everyone can access training. 

The first quarterly training sessions were delivered by the TEL team in September and received positive feedback from those attending. The next sessions will be held in December. To find out more and register for the next sessions please visit the support site.

IV Therapy Passport Course Moving to the Learning Hub

The current version of the IV Therapy Passport course will soon be updated and moved to the Learning Hub. If you have already started this course, please make sure you complete all 7 modules by 31 October 2025 and download and save your certificates as soon as possible. Once the course moves to the Learning Hub, you will no longer be able to access or download certificates from this version.

If you have not yet started the course, please wait for the new, updated version, which will be available in early November 2025. We will share further details and access information soon.

 

AI Ambassador meeting October

The next AI Ambassador network meeting will take place on 5 November 10:30am – midday and will cover AI in Primary Care - developments, challenges, regulation and Ambient AI. Plus, updates on AI developments and opportunities across health and social care. Hear from speakers Dr Tafsir Ahmed - Bart's Health NHS Trust, Dr Tim Caroe - Primary Care Transformation Medical Directorate NHS England, Mark Okun - NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board. Join the AI Ambassador Network to register. 

 

New elearning session available on Managing Severe ME/CFS

A new training session is now available in the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) elearning course. The new session is titled Managing Severe ME/CFS and is the third training in the series. The Managing Severe ME/CFS session offers guidance to healthcare professionals who support, or have an interest in, the management of people living with severe and very severe ME/CFS. Please ensure that you complete the first two sessions in the elearning programme before moving onto the new third session.

We understand there is a critical need for recording course completions across organisations, and we are working on a solution for administrators to access reporting data in the Learning Hub.
