I want to share some recent developments this week. I had the privilege of attending a breakfast meeting at Parliament House with the Premier Chris Minns. We discussed various issues, but one topic close to our hearts is the importance of healthy eating and exercise. The Premier announced that he will be working with Nutrition Australia NSW to encourage all people to prioritise their well-being by making healthy choices and staying active. The 5 a day programme (making sure you consume 5 portions of vegetables a day) will be rolled out throughout NSW as a small step that will lead to a significant improvement in our overall health. I also had the pleasure of meeting with the President of Local Government NSW Cr Darrea Turley with the Strathfield Executive team. The importance of communication with this government sector is vital to take issues to state and federal government. We discussed the need for experienced individuals in the specialised local government sector, which offers exciting and diverse career opportunities. It’s a field that can provide a fulfilling and interesting career path for those leaving school. We are going to encourage our job seekers and our younger students to consider a career path in local government. I also visited Auburn Police Station to review and listen to the latest crime statistics in Strathfield. Unfortunately, fraud and scams remain an ongoing problem, particularly for our older residents. It is vital that we take steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones from potential scams. For more information, please visit the police website. It gives detailed information on all you need to know. Another concerning issue is the sale of drugs in our streets, primarily occurring at night. Our trees and low lighting in Strathfield make it an attractive location for this activity. If you come across this suspicious activity, please DO NOT confront these people but call Crime Stoppers instead on 1800 333 000. Your vigilance can help keep our community safe. Let’s work together to safeguard our community and maintain Strathfield as a safe a vibrant place to live. Your cooperation and commitment to these precautions are greatly appreciated. Stay safe and look out for one another. As always, if you require any further information or need to contact me, please do by phone 9748 9999 or email cr.kpensabene@strathfield.nsw.gov.au Strathfield Spring Clean Up In theme with National Recycling Week 2023 (13-19 November), Strathfield Council proudly presents “Strathfield Spring Clean Up”, an annual drop-off initiative for our community to refresh and recycle unwanted goods to reduce our impact on the environment. THROWBACK THURSDAY Strathfield Town Hall’s Early Charity Balls After its opening on 9 October, 1923, Strathfield Town Hall quickly became a venue for fundraising balls. One was held the following week to raise funds for the new St Martha’s Catholic Church. ‘Upwards of 400 enthusiastic dancers fully appreciated the splendid floor, and until midnight jazzed to the thrilling and well-timed music of Mr A. Hahn’s Orchestra.’ This photo shows one of the charity balls organised by Mayoress Amy Wallis for the ‘season’ of 1924. The proceeds from three balls were shared among a number of hospitals and children’s homes. Charity Ball, Strathfield Town Hall, 1924.
