From the General Manager's desk

Welcome to our final newsletter of 2022! The next edition due early in the new year.

Since our last newsletter we have been clocking up the miles attending the Dowerin Field Days, the WA Robotics Playoffs at Curtin, Farmer On Your Plate in Perth CBD, the 2022 Ag Institute Australia Careers Night in Claremont, Cunderdin Ag College Career Expo and Ellenbrook Secondary College Career Expo.  We’ve also been giving guided tours here at Muresk to groups of students visiting us from Northam Senior High School, Cunderdin Ag College and WA College of Agriculture Harvey.

It has been exciting to see our new shearing shed become operational with the shearing team arriving on 22 August for the inaugural Merino sheep shearing. Koda, pictured above taking a break, was hard at work in September when the shearers returned for three days to finish shearing the rest of Muresk’s Merino mob.

Not one but two 5-day Broadacre Harvest Operations skill set courses were delivered back-to back in September and October with the majority of students, from both courses, coming out already with a job lined up for this year’s harvest.  Muresk remains committed to delivering industry-driven education and training opportunities to meet the ever-growing demand for skilled Ag workers, particularly from the Wheatbelt.

Our website continues to undergo improvements to make accessing information about our courses, facilities and events easier – you can read previous newsletters, view our facilities, register for upcoming events and see what courses are on offer.  This year we also ramped-up our social media presence (on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and we are encouraged by the results – a significant increase of visitors to these platforms and traffic to our website, and even enquiries from prospective employers in direct response to our social media posts about students completing our skill set courses.

I wish everyone happy National Agriculture Day 2022 on 18 November and I look forward to sharing more Muresk news with you in 2023!

To stay informed of the latest news and opportunities you can like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter or Instagram, or visit our website to view the latest courses offered at Muresk Institute.

New shearing shed put through its paces!

Muresk Institute invited Shire of Northam President, and Muresk alumnus, Cr Chris Antonio to view our brand new shearing shed during its inaugural Merino sheep shearing day on 22 August.  The following day we welcomed students from WA College of Agriculture Harvey who also got to see the new shed in action as part of their guided tour of Muresk Farm.

In September we had the crew from Progress Shearing out to shear the rest of our hoggets that weren’t shorn at Dowerin Field Days.

The fleece was skirted, pressed, labelled then sent off to market.

Some comments from the students:

‘Excellent!  Practical based education with theory placed in good context.’ ~ David

‘It is great for those who have had no experience with machines.’ ~ Bethany

‘I would recommend to do it before commencing a farm job.’ ~ Tanya

‘Content was great. Lecturers went over and above to provide inside farming tips and common sense.’ ~ Samantha

Muresk Institute Campus Expansion Public Art Commission

York-based artist Nic Compton received the Muresk Institute Campus Expansion Public Art Commission to create an art work for the new Specialist Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation grounds. In his proposal, Nic stated:

I propose to build a free standing sculpture that will reflect the organisation’s mission to demonstrate farming systems and support training and workforce development for the farming community and the agricultural sector. Agrisculpture will be a simple monolithic free standing work built with two large Jarrah slabs back-to-back and connected with stainless steel spacers. While being a modest yet powerful form, the imagery carved in low relief will exhibit the aspirations of the Institute.

Here are some photos of the sculpture-in-progress.

Dowerin Field Days

Dowerin Field Days was a blast this year! So many exciting things to share with visitors to our stall.

The VIPER Ram Shed was buzzing with our AMSEA Shire Evaluation hoggets being shorn.
