If you missed it, here's week 1 of the Let's Get Moving Challenge. Inclusive Fitness Fitness comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether that be an outdoor walk, wheelchair basketball, or adapted adult fitness, there is something for everyone and every ability. If you've wanted to get involved in fitness, but haven't found the right fit for your ability level, check out the resource below! The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement specializes in adapted physical activity and para sports at the University of Alberta. It is centred around supporting the sport and fitness goals of people experiencing disability and was founded in 1978. They have multiple programs such as the Adult Fitness and Recreation program designed to provide different entry points to adapted physical activity or the Functional Electrical Stimulation Exercise program for individuals with paralyzed muscle that are unable to exercise on their own. Farmer's MarketFarmer's Markets are an excellent way of accessing organic food, supporting local businesses, connecting with the broader community, and expanding your culinary knowledge by trying out new produce! Reflection Question: How Do You Stay Active on Campus?To get us started off this week. Try reflecting on how do you stay active on campus? Fill out the form below! Movement SnacksMovement snacks are small bursts of exercise throughout the day. This can be done with desk exercises, stretch breaks, chores, standing breaks, and lots more. It’s a great way to continually stay active during a busy day. If you want to learn more about movement snacks, check out the button below for more information and ideas! Alternative Movement Living actively doesn't have to look like going to the gym if that's not your thing. There is no one way to live actively. Alternative movements still count as active living. We want to highlight the small things that aren't classically thought of as exercising that can still be integrated into your daily life to get you moving and staying active. These alternative movements are actually pretty common so you might even be doing them already. Way to go! Active Transportation Sometimes we have problems finding time to be active in our busy schedules. Well how about active ways to commute? I mean you have to get to school/ work anyways, right? Make the most of it! Learn how to modify your commute to incorporate more movement below. Weekly Challenge: Movement Minutes Tracker Note: Even if you don't complete the 150 minutes, but track your activity for the week, come by HFLC for your prize anyway. This week's challenge is to track your movement minutes. ParticipAction recommends 150 minutes of movement/activity per week for adults (18-64 years old). Movement minutes could look like anything that gets you moving such as walking, doing chores, taking the stairs! Instructions: Colour or cross off each 5 minutes box after completing 5 minutes of activity. Fill out the tracker within the week and win a prize. Come to the front desk of the Hanson Fitness and Lifestyle Centre (HFLC) to claim your prize! Printed sheets available at HFLC as well.
CCR Spotlight: Dive-In Movie NightDate | Wednesday, January 17 Make a splash and join CCR for a night of laughter, adventure, and underwater wonder at our annual Dive-In Movie Night. All you need to bring is yourself, your OneCard, and a swimsuit! Movie, popcorn, and snacks are free to all UofA Students. Participants can view the movie from an inner tube in the pool (spots are limited) or from the bleachers. THIS EVENT IS FOR U OF A STUDENTS ONLY. More wellness resources you say? The Canadian Disability Participation Project has plenty of resources, toolkits and knowledge translation materials for people with disabilities who want to participate in sports and exercise!
