From Vital Signs to Digital Health: An AI Perspective

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how clinical research teams collect, interpret, and act on patient data. Join the University of Alberta Digital Health Unit (DHU) for an engaging research seminar exploring how AI and wearable technologies are transforming patient monitoring—from traditional vital signs to next-generation digital biomarkers.

Featured Speaker

Dr. Shaoxiong Sun

Lecturer (Assistant Professor), Department of Computer Science
University of Sheffield

Dr. Sun leads an internationally recognized research program focused on AI-powered patient monitoring. His work combines deep learning, physiological signal processing, wearable sensors, and digital biomarkers to develop innovative approaches for monitoring patients both in hospital and remotely. His research spans applications in depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, ADHD, COVID-19, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring.

His research interests include:

  • Artificial intelligence for healthcare
  • Wearable sensors and remote patient monitoring
  • Digital biomarkers
  • Deep learning for physiological signals (ECG, PPG, accelerometry)
  • Foundation models in digital health
  • Signal processing for precision medicine

Why attend?

This seminar will be of particular interest to:

  • Clinical investigators
  • Research coordinators
  • Clinical trial professionals
  • Digital health researchers
  • Biomedical engineers
  • Data scientists
  • Students and trainees interested in AI-enabled healthcare

Whether your work involves decentralized clinical trials, wearable devices, remote monitoring, or digital endpoints, this presentation will provide valuable insight into emerging technologies that are shaping the future of clinical research.
