May 2021Dear parents, guardians, and family members,
The academic year 2020–21—unusual in so many ways—is coming to a close, and we’ve come through it with strength and resilience that should make every student proud to be a Geneseo Knight. We recognize that the year presented us with extraordinary challenges, but we want to congratulate our graduating seniors on their many accomplishments during one of the most trying times in the history of higher education. Hundreds of our seniors participated in our Graduate Procession and Recognition Event on May 12 (you can watch a video of the event here). Our official commencement ceremony and degree conferral went live online on May 22, and we invite you to check it out. All of us at Geneseo wish our seniors good luck on their next steps, be they employment, travel, graduate school, or just life’s next adventure. In addition to wishing our graduates well, we’re excited to welcome both new and returning students to campus for in-person classes this fall. Please encourage your students to consider getting vaccinated and take care of themselves over the summer—and to prepare themselves for a wonderful academic year ahead. If you’d like more news about the College, you can subscribe to the monthly community edition of Geneseo’s e-newsletter One College Circle or become a fan of Geneseo’s Facebook page or other social media platforms. And as always, if you have any questions or concerns, you can feel free to contact me or the Center for Community staff. We’re more than happy to assist you. I hope you are all well. My best wishes to you for a safe and productive summer. Lenny Sancilio The official commencement ceremony and degree conferral is available online, including a senior oration, messages from Geneseo alumni, and individual recognition for each graduate. Graduates were invited to submit their own individual photo, brief statement, and 10-second video clip. Resources The women’s team took first and the men’s team fourth in the All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference Championships, earning 50 combined honors between the two teams (the fourth-most among all institutions). Emily Lavarnway ’21 earned All-Region honors in eight different events, the most of any NCAA Div. III student-athlete. The softball team closed its season in the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament Erie Regional, and pitcher Nicole Schwartz ’21 was named SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year. Caitlyn Merkel ’21 and Hannah Marafioti ’21 were Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) All-Empire Region selections. This summer, students may want to explore Geneseo’s Career Development Office, including the Handshake platform, for help with job and internship searches and overall career development. Virtual Career Resources can help your student get started. Vaccination requirements across New York State and SUNY are changing regularly, and Geneseo is still developing its own protocols for this fall. Information on the COVID vaccine will be shared as soon as SUNY administration provides guidance. Please continue to check with Student Health and Counseling for updated information, and please encourage your student to consider getting vaccinated when they have the opportunity.
